Jacob's Hands is a novella-length film treatment for a script about a ranch hand who, after learning that he has the gift of healing, becomes disillusioned when he discovers that mending a broken body does not always heal a tormented soul. The slim volume proves both mesmerizing and moving, and the use of the present tense lends an air of innocence and mystery to the story, while the book's emotional undercurrents and passions stir up deeper, troubling responses. Gentle, simple-souled Jacob Erickson works on a ranch in the Mojave desert as a semi-magical healer of sick and injured animals. When Sharon, the boss's crippled but stage-struck daughter, asks shyly adoring Jacob to heal her, too, he obliges and she flees the ranch. Eighteen months later, they meet again in L.A.: he's a workman, healing children who are brought to him at a small church; she works in a burlesque theater?the reality pit stop of her stage dreams. Seeing money in Jacob's powers, the theater's unscrupulous managers blackmail Sharon into convincing Jacob to go into the healing business with them. Sharon and Jacob should go back to the clean pure desert and do some good, but they are trapped by Jacob's compassion for one of his patients, Earl Medwin, the chronically ill heir to a vast fortune, and by Sharon's final surrender to temptation?Earl's assiduous attentions and all that money. A literary curiosity. While resident in Hollywood in the 1940s, the acerbic British novelist Aldous Huxley and the playwright Christopher Isherwood collaborated on two screenplays. Though the actual screenplay of ``Jacob's Hands,'' the tale of a naive faith healer in the 1920s, apparently no longer exists, a narrative treatment of it was recently located among Huxley's remaining papers and is now being published. While elements of the tale are clearly reminiscent of these writers (Huxley's bemused fascination with America's pursuit of fame and fortune; Isherwood's deep interest in spirituality), the prose is at best workmanlike. That isn't surprisingthis draft was likely meant for private circulation, not publication. The story focuses on Jacob, a traumatized veteran of WWI who has fled to the Mojave Desert for solitude, but is discovered to carry an uncanny ability to heal in his handsas well as a gift for sensing the true state of someone's spirit. Used to practicing his gift on animals, he reluctantly agrees to try to help Sharon, a young crippled woman. He succeeds, becomes infatuated with her, and follows her to Los Angeles, where she has gone determined to become a star. Not surprisingly, Jacob is discovered by a huckster who uses the healer's love for Sharon (who has become a cynical, opportunistic entertainer) to turn him into a saleable commodity. Romantic complications and betrayals follow, and Jacob eventually flees back to the desert. It's hard not to imagine the film while reading this spare narrative, but equally hard to find much pleasure in the prose. I love this book!

The narration of this story is more simplistic than Brave New World, but keep in mind that Jacob's Hands was written as a screenplay, not a novel. Aldous Huxley and Christopher Isherwood have created a wonderful story and though the reading is easy, the questions brought to life in this tale are anything but. Jacob is the shy, gentle antagonist (who reminds me of John Steinbeck's Lenny)blessed and cursed simultaneously with the gift of healing. Exploited and heart-broken, he must determine the true benefit of mending the broken bodies brought to him when he can do nothing to repair their souls. Ideas in this story range from the physical hardships of the lame, to the role of spirituality in healing, to first loves and betrayal. Enjoyable and thought-provoking, I recommend this book to anyone who likes to ponder over Huxley's logic, or just enjoys to read.

HEAL ME!

Jacob's Hands is a tantalizing account of one man's eyes opening. Poor Jacob, so ingnorant of the world. He truly believes in goodness. This book is a look into the evils of human nature. Human nature is greedy and self serving, unfortunately, Jacob does not realize this. In attempt to give his love all that he can, he opens himself up to exploitation. This book is a reader's journey into the souls of the pure and the corrupt. Perhaps the authors whished us all to take a good deep look into our own souls and the manner in which we treat others. This book is just one more glorious demonstration of life by Adlous Huxley, this time with the help of Christopher Isherwood.

To Be Swallowed

The story goes that in 1997 actress Sharon Stone was reading the diaries of playwright/novelist Christopher Isherwood and discovered that Christopher has collaborated on a screenplay with novelist/essayist Aldous Huxley. She asked permission to search the estate, and in a dusty trunk was found a yellowed copy of Jacob's Hands. The best guess is that the fable had been written in the late 1930's, when (as the back jacket says), "a large sector of the intellectual community of Europe immigrated to the United States, to California in particular. What they found there was Nirvana - sunshine, freedome, mysticism, and the burgeoning movie industry." The two great thinkers met amidst this illectual Utopia and wrote this work together.

This is a short book, an easy read in an hour's time. As such, it is hard to say too much without giving it all away. Jacob is a good, honest, decent, sound, strapping young man. The kind of man that sees no ill will in others because he has none in himself. He learns as a farmhand on a California ranch that he has the power to heal. The power makes other love him, suspect him, and ultimately exploit him. He loves Sharon, the daughter of his former boss on the ranch. He meets Earl, a young millionaire with need of his healing powers. The three of them form a triangle that sort of reminds me of the ending of Ethan Frome (don't ask me why, though, since it's kind of a stretch).

The overriding theme, I believe, of the book is this question: is it more important to heal the soul or to heal the body? Are they ultimately connected or mutually exclusive? There is also some discussion of how sometimes we hold on to our illness, our weakness; we are wont to let them go. Because somehow they come to define us, and we survive more with the fear than we can live without it.

There is a brief introduction to the book by Aldous' wife, Laura Archera Huxley. It is useful in the fact that she gives some background into Aldous' thoughts on healing and the moral and religious implications of such a gift. It helps to set an informed backdrop to this interesting and thought-provoking fable.

Absolute nonsense!

This 'book' and its contents are nothing more than pure fantasy concocted by a Paranormal group that have not done anything and never will do anything to further investigation into the moors murders case.
I have had the great misfortune to have been contacted by this group before this nonsense was published and I was asked to take them seriously. Having spent 50 years living with this case and going over the known facts countless times I can state that this pathetic attempt to gain an insight into more facts and to get into the head of Brady is one of the worst examples of self-publicity and total rubbish I have ever come across.
I have even had cause to contact the Greater Manchester Police about the anguish these people cause to myself and my family (I am the brother of Keith Bennett, the only victim of Brady and Hindley not to have found.) The latest quote I have from the police is 'We all share the same views of the Worsley Paranormal Society and again they have been politely but clearly told where they stand and informed of our views on the lack of legitimacy of their visions/musings/opinions.'

This group of misled and misinformed individuals still trawl the internet claiming, firstly, that they have the support of the police and then they state that they cannot understand why they are not taken seriously! Nobody with any sort of understanding of this case and the details of this case will ever take them seriously, the sooner they take that FACT in the better for all concerned.

A different insight into the Moors Murders

A book which obviously is bothering people ? especially ones who have never even read it yet make a comment. The Secret Key to The Moors Murders is a book that is showing why Ian Brady was influenced by things he read and watched like films. He was living in a time warp and acted out much in a fantasy world he created. By using History and historical people he admired, like Oliver Cromwell, writers and poets and especially the Industrial Revolution,he was able to map the areas to this and create a puzzle field where he buried clues to what this was all about. The writers and Geniuses like James Joyce, W B Yeats, T S Eliot and the surrealism Artists of Paris.. I explain why I am able to see these .. then I have gone deeper into the Occult and Crowley and the areas he visited to see why these were important to him and possible sites for other victims. Its complex and no wonder he has been able to hide behind all of this and keep his game going. Even the names of people he writes to mean more to him, like Cowley and even the name Bennett..

Nothing new or useful

There is a wealth of information including probably over 100 charts and illustrations in this book. For many people, this and the accompanying text will make the book worth having. However, if you are going to write a 543 page book and promise some significant conclusions about important subjects, you need to do better than this book. This is more like a textbook that labors to cover all of the issues in a scholarly way but never really comes up with any new or useful ideas or solutions to the important problems of the world. Sachs is assuming his name and reputation will sell this book and convince people to go to the trouble of reading it and recommending it to others. There are better books:

Excellent and Insightful

As a preface, I am a doctoral student in civil engineering specializing in sustainable systems. Understanding that this is from the standpoint as an economist, this is a very insightful and comprehensive book. However, I find it lacking in one distinct department. Its discussion on built infrastructure as a whole is lacking in terms of insight into an aging infrastructure core. This discussion from an engineering standpoint, would have pushed this book to five stars for me.

"The Age of Sustainable Development", is a most excellent book... Enjoy!

Dr. Jeffrey D. Sachs is a world-renowned professor of economics (Columbia Univ.), leader in sustainable development, senior UN adviser, bestselling author, and columnist has written this cool new book "The Age of Sustainable Development". They were plugging it on the "Morning Joe", so I got it from Amazon and read it. It makes very clear the relationship between the three legs of sustainability: economy, ecology, and society. Whatever your politics, this helps to look at the whole picture with a hope that we will make smart decisions rather than partisan decisions. This is a powerful book with empowering knowledge and perspective. He tracks population, carbon, economic growth, and warming together to show the interwoven complexities of it all. I am an Architect, green-geek, and currently working on a Masters Degree in Energy Policy and Climate. This book was awesome. Where "An Inconvenient Truth" opened out eyes to climate change, this book widens our perspective on how we all might be difference makers. Sachs is a really good writer and researcher. Even the graphic tables and illustrations are simple, lean and clear. The written voice is also excellent and but in no way dumb-down, but also not condescendingly verbose; It is a good read. The future challenges are going to tough and will require a multifaceted approach to establish a way forward. We need the knowledge tools and so I highly recommend this book for the tool box. Enjoy!

About the Author

He is currently editing The Oxford Handbook to European Romanticism.

Not worth the money

The text is written by a 10th grader who works very hard to embellish hard facts (exam data) with an unimaginable number of would, should, could descriptors. I cannot imagine passing the exam using nothing but this poorly written text. If this is truly the level of thinking and knowledge ISACA requires for CISM certification, I am not interested in taking the exam. Unfortunately this was a 140 dollar lesson.

Pretty basic, but easy to understand

Nothing lit up? try plugging it in....no sound, check the volume control...that kind of instruction, with a few slightly upper division ones, maybe something for an 8th grader or an oldie with no tech experience. I was hoping for something that tells me what an "exception" is and how I got it, or why the blue screen of death hits me once a month, and how to fix that. If that is what you want, keep shopping.

It's sort of a sequel to Monster Hunter Illustrations Art Book Set.

As the title suggest, this book contains exclusively computer generated illustrations. These are screenshots from the cut scenes as well as many characters, monsters and weapons used in the game.

There are tons of dragon designs with most of them display in top, side and front views. The details are amazing. This is like the zoo of awesomeness. One of the dragons is as huge as a small hill, when seen in the size comparison chart with other dragons.

The impressive array of dragon busting weapons are cut out individually for display. The ingenuity of design reflects highly on the creativity of the artists. For the characters, they are in different armour and tribal costumes. The pages are filled to the brim with images.

Right at the end is a section on promotional graphics for the game.

This book is most highly recommended to Monster Hunter fans, video game and fantasy artists.

although great but if you are looking for great detail in the in-game monsters, this is not the book for you because the monsterologies are small and i recommend Monster Hunter Illustration which contains large full page monsterologies. but if you are just looking for great CG you definitely should buy this book. also this book is NOT HARDCOVER, it is PAPERBACK
