Good book.

Good book. As a criminal defense attorney I find this book useful to help explain to DUI clients how cops will likely testify regarding the things cops say they observed while administering field sobriety tests to my clients. The book lists the various "validated" cues that cops are supposed to look for when administering common field sobriety tests. It also explains some of the science and theory underlying the various tests. Many clients think that they did well on the field sobriety tests. Unfortunatley, many DUI defendant's do not know what the cop was really looking for when administering the field sobriety tests. This book helps explain that.

Was hoping for something more

A little disappointed with this one. Good content, however when I think of a book that is titled advanced dui investigation then I expect more than a chapter covering different drug categories and effects. Concidering the price and the lack of valuable court testimony (this book reviewed general testimony that had nothing to do with ovi material that will be asked by an attorney in trial or motion to suppress) this left me disappointed.

Like all books on metrics, PRAGMATIC Security Metrics: Applying Metametrics to Information Security makes the statement that "you can't manage what you can't measure".  The authors claim that other books on information security metrics discuss number theory and statistics in academic terms. This title promises to be light on mathematics and heavy on utility and is meant as a how-to-do-it guide for security metrics.

As to the title, PRAGMATIC is an acronym for the basis of the method of the book, in using metrics that are predictive, relevant, actionable, genuine, meaningful, timely, independent and cost. After reading the first chapter, PRAGMATIC Security Metrics: Applying Metametrics to Information Security looks like it may live up to its promise of being able to use metrics not only to track and report performance but to identify problem areas and opportunities, and drive information security improvements. If so, this could be the metrics book a lot of information security professionals have been waiting for.

About the Author
Krag Brotby CISM CGEIT has 30 years' experience in enterprise computer security architecture, governance, risk, and metrics. He is the principal author/editor of ISACA's Certified Information Security Manager Review Manual, plus Information Security Governance: Guidance for Boards of Directors and Guidance for Information Security Managers; Information Security Management Metrics; and Information Security Governance: A Practical Development and Implementation Approach.  Krag has served on ISACA committees and the California High Tech Task Force Steering Committee, and frequently presents conference workshops and seminars. Krag was the principal architect for Xerox BASIA enterprise security and the SWIFT Next Gen PKI; served as technical director at RAND Corporation and chief security strategist for TransactPlus.  He developed policies for several U.S. banks and consulted for Australia Post, New Zealand Inland Revenue, Singapore Infocom Development Agency, Microsoft, Unisys, AT&T, BP Alyeska, Countrywide Financial, Informix, Visa, VeriSign, Digital Signature Trust, Zantaz, Bank Al-Bilad, J.P. A wealth of tools and inputs for anybody having to deal with metrics.

In the last few years the term "security metrics" has developed somewhat into a holy grail. Everybody wants them, everybody seems to know that they are necessary, but how the devil is the CISO or the IT department able to get them? As a result we were presented with ISO 27004, some NIST papers and others and the time of writing the term "security metrics" generates over 2.4m hits when googled and "information security metrics" over 990'000.
As a CISO I am need of security metrics myself but was always a little bit hesitant of delving deeper into the matter as some of the books I read about the topic seemed arcane and rather impractical for daily use. And now this book comes along, making the whole matter in my opinion much clearer and easier to handle.

In the first few chapters Brotby and Hinson provide an overview of the status quo and the why and how of security metrics. They deal with great insight with the differing methods and concepts, and the purpose of and audience for security metrics. Chapter 5 deals concisely with points actually to be measured and where one can find them. Throughout the language is very accessible, making this book a pleasure to read and work with.

In chapter 6 the authors then provide us with a thoughtful introduction to their PRAGMATIC approach which is followed by a chapter with over 150 information security metrics. All these metrics are explained in detail, are easy to understand and thus provide a practical tool ready to use for anybody in need of reference points what and how to "measure security".

The next chapter deals concisely with the "how to". The authors provide a clear and concise explanation of how to design an information security measurement system using their method. In just about 20 pages they manage to make clear what has to go into the system, which reference points are to be considered and how everything can be pulled together in order to be able to create a system which can be easily handled and worked with as required.

The final chapters then provide the readers with more information about using metrics in general and the system of Brotby and Hinson in particular. A case study shows the practical application of the PRAGMATIC system and the final pages provide once more a wealth of helpful tools.

In summary I would like to give the following verdict: Until now I have not come across a book about information security metrics that was so clearly and concisely written. The book is easy to understand and provides a wealth of tools and inputs for anybody having to deal with metrics.

The sample metrics and the very thoughtful insights regarding the creation of an information security metrics system tailor-made for the individual organization hopefully will make this book a standard work. It is clear that the authors have thought a lot about the subject and also have practical experience in the matter, as otherwise this tome would have turned out turgid and technological, something which it clearly is not.

Good guide for to develop an information security metrics program

Like all books on metrics, early in PRAGMATIC Security Metrics: Applying Metametrics to Information Security authors Krag Brotby and Gary Hinson state that “you can't manage what you can't measure”.

The authors claim that other books on information security metrics discuss number theory and statistics in academic terms. This title promises to be light on mathematics and heavy on utility and is meant as a how-to-do-it guide for security metrics.

Based on that claim, the authors likely had a book such as Data-Driven Security: Analysis, Visualization and Dashboards by Jay Jacobs and Bob Rudis in mind. As Jacobs and Rudis do indeed use statistics extensively in their approach to security metrics.

As to the title, PRAGMATIC is an acronym for the basis of the method of the book, in using metrics that are predictive, relevant, actionable, genuine, meaningful, timely, independent and cost.

One of the benefits of the book is that it provides a method to create quantitative methods for risk, and how to estimate which resources to use to mitigate those identified risks

The authors note that as a consequence of the way the field of information security has developed from IT security, current practice in security metrics seems to be driving by the availability of raw data from firewalls and other systems. But when it comes to measuring security, many organizations completely ignore the nontechnical factors that are often of equal importance to managing information security in a manner that supports the firm’s business objectives. And that is precisely the gap the book is attempting to fix.

Chapter 7 makes up the bulk of the book when it details over 150 different useful metrics in which to use.

More than metrics

This books makes you think about metrics. It is applied to information security, but the line of thinking can easily be extended to many other fields of management. Before offering a rated choice of about 150 metrics, the authors explain a complete methodology on choosing and rating candidate metrics. A must read for those that produce KPI's for senior management, or for senior manager that want to be informed by useful indicators.

We got the book and CD and really enjoyed it. Both my son and myself enjoyed it

I got this book because my son wanted to learn Latin and I didn't want to buy a language course until we looked at some things. We got the book and CD and really enjoyed it. Both my son and myself enjoyed it! We picked up some new words quickly and decided to go ahead and learn Latin. We listen to the CD and look at the book often. I would buy this again!

The kids recognize some of the songs by their cadence or music, and the others are fun to guess while driving in the car. It's also a great way to introduce them to Latin pronunciation. The Latin poem is on one side, English on the other side.

The same sharp intelligence and self-deprecating wit that made Michael J. Fox a star in the Family Ties TV series and Back to the Future make this a lot punchier than the usual up-from-illness celebrity memoir. Yes, he begins with the first symptoms of Parkinson's disease, the incurable illness that led to his retirement from Spin City (and acting) in 2000. And yes, he assures us he is a better, happier person now than he was before he was diagnosed. In Fox's case, you actually might believe it, because he then cheerfully exposes the insecurities and self-indulgences of his pre-Parkinson's life in a manner that makes them not glamorous but wincingly ordinary and of course very funny. ("As for the question, 'Does it bother you that maybe she just wants to sleep with you because you're a celebrity?' My answer to that one was, 'Ah...nope.'") With a working-class Canadian background, Fox has an unusually detached perspective on the madness of mass-media fame; his description of the tabloid feeding frenzy surrounding his 1988 wedding to Tracy Pollan, for example, manages to be both acid and matter-of-fact. He is frank but not maudlin about his drinking problem, and he refreshingly notes that getting sober did not automatically solve all his other problems. This readable, witty autobiography reminds you why it was generally a pleasure to watch Fox onscreen: he's a nice guy with an edge, and you don't have to feel embarrassed about liking him. --Wendy Smith

I loved this book, when I read it the 1st time it helped me to accept myself having Parkinson's disease. It also made me get the courage to find a support group. I have passed my old book out to others and it helped them to understand Parkinson's also. I bought this book aslo as a gift to a friend who has already read it twice, and had reordered one for myself as a refresher when I have bad days. It brightens up my day and makes me laugh at different parts in the book. So I can't thank you enough for writing this book, it has been a Godsend.

Great tell all.

If you've ever wondered about the real life of Alex P Keaton start here. As a child of the 80s I remember MJF being one of my first crushes so of course I was interested in finding out abt his origins. He shares the story of his struggle to become an actor and how he comes to accept having and living with young onset Parkinson's Disease. Very well written and interesting. It is really nice to go on this journey with him not only as an actor but as a human being through his highs and lows. It took courage to share this much and he does so eloquently.

An incredible story filled with laughs and tears

In a memoir about his diagnosis and ultimate acceptance of Parkinson's disease, Michael J. Fox gives a compelling account of his journey from alcoholic, self-centered celebrity to his family-centered, life-loving, Parkinson's-diseased self. Although an easy read, Fox targets an adult audience as he reveals many of his biggest struggles--personal insecurities, family problems, alcoholism, and early onset Parkinson's disease. Fox attacks these dark topics that are so often left unspoken with ease. Using wit and humor, he makes these issues more human even as his Hollywood persona--the lovable kid from Family Ties and the Back to the Future trilogy--struggles with them.

Fox earned his 5 stars as he had me interested and laughing throughout the entire book. Even while reading about such heavy topics, I didn't want to put the book down. Fox chose to tell his overall story using short, non-chronological stories ranging in time from toddlerhood to the present. Although this gave me some timeline issues in which I found myself flipping back to previous stories for the answer, I thought Fox's choice to use this style of writing was a good one. The placement of each story helped me to understand its significance and how it contributed to making Fox the person he is today. Fox also addressed complicated medical problems (including the diagnosis, symptoms, and treatments for Parkinson's disease) without using heavy medical jargon. In this way, he is able to give the reader a good understanding of the disease.

The Geonic period from about the late sixth to mid-eleventh centuries is of crucial importance in the history of Judaism. The Geonim, for whom this era is named, were the heads of the ancient talmudic academies of Babylonia. They gained ascendancy over the older Palestinian center of Judaism and were recognized as the leading religious and spiritual authorities by most of the world’s Jewish population. The Geonim and their circles enshrined the Babylonian Talmud as the central canonical work of rabbinic literature and the leading guide to religious practice, and it was a predominantly Babylonian version of Judaism that was transplanted to newer centers of Judaism in North Africa and Europe. Robert Brody’s book—the first survey in English of the Geonic period in almost a century—focuses on the cultural milieu of the Geonim and on their intellectual and literary creativity.

Brody describes the cultural spheres in which the Geonim were active and the historical and cultural settings within which they functioned. He emphasizes the challenges presented by other Jewish institutions and individuals, ranging from those within the Babylonian Jewish setting—especially the political leadership represented by the Exilarch—to the competing Palestinian Jewish center and to sectarian movements and freethinkers who rejected rabbinic authority altogether. He also describes the variety of ways in which the development of Geonic tradition was affected by the surrounding non-Jewish cultures, both Muslim and Christian.

Levine's first book, Dharma Punx, was the autobiography of a young hell-raiser. Having escaped juvenile hall and drug addiction through the slow discipline of Buddhist practices, the son of Buddhist author Stephen Levine is now a spiritual teacher. In this book he presents what he has learned about and through Buddhism. The compelling personal narrative may be gone, but the disarming, frank tone that made the first book persuasive remains. Clear and Pointed

Cutting through the White Noise, Levine just does not just explain the basic tenents but applies them to the lives we all lead. Dealing with sexual temptations? "Sexual suffering is caused not by the energy itself, but by our own inability to understand and skillfully deal with that energy." He suggests ways to do just that, all the while adhering to Sid's(short hand for the Buddha) blessing that while his finger may point us to the moon, his finger is not the moon. Forgiveness? Peel away the actor from the action. "An action from a confused and suffering being in the past doesn't represent who that being is forever;it is only an expression of the being's suffering." To lash out at those who hurt us because they have been hurt and are in pain only continues the cycle. A worthwhile contribution.

I don't play the guitar, I just wanted the cd Pt 6

A Japanese CD Book, including 26 pieces of Final Fantasy I thru XIII sheet music specifically arranged for the guitar. The cd has Daisuke Minamizawa performing the same pieces from the book, as a kind of audio sampler. The book has what it calls 'Playing Advice' between each song, along with diagrams of where your fingers should be on the guitar when playing the chords. It also has the performers Discography and a few advertisements for other Final Fantasy Guitar Books. All of these are in Japanese of course, which make reading the Playing Advice and the chord diagrams hard for those of us who are not fluent.

Great BOOK!

Vol. 1 out of 3 Volumes by Dream Music Factory.

Just like the other 2 volumes the books this comes with the beats measure, tabs, and chord chart with directions of how to play it. There are total 8 Guitar solo book and these are the three books that has extra chord help diagrams.
The titles are all written in Japanese.

I bought 4 New books from Visual Japan all about $37.35 to $38.50 and $3.99 shipping each, delivered in a large enveloped and inside the 4 books are wrapped nicely in a bubble wrap with a cute origami, thanks card and stickers, makes it a cute add on :) .Two of the books are in perfect condition and the other 2 has 1/4" crumpled at the bottom right corner on half of the book pages, But its at the edge so doesn't bother me too much.

About the Author
Tom Holmes, PhD, is Professor Emeritus at Western Michigan University, where he was awarded the State of Michigan Teaching Excellence Award. He has been training graduate students in psychotherapy since 1985 and since 1996 he has been teaching in the Holistic Health Care Program. His specialty area is spirituality and the therapeutic process. Tom received training in Internal Family System therapy from Richard Schwartz in the late 1980 s and has been teaching, training and practicing IFS since that time. In recent years his focus has been on burnout prevention: Healing the Healer and Tuning the Heart of the Healer. His workshops integrate Western psychology with Buddhist psychology and the Sufi path of the heart as well as spiritual teachings from Christianity, Judaism, and Taoism. He specializes in integrating spirituality with internal system therapy.

Parts Work, great introduction

This book was recommended to me after I had expressed interest in the Internal Family System work. It is indeed really worthwhile to read and reread it, because it contains so much information presented in an easily understandable way.
The one quibble I have with this book compared to Jay Earley's Self-therapy is that Holmes keeps repeating that it is difficult and/or impossible to work on your own with this system while Earley obviously takes the position that it is very well possible to do this work on your own or with a buddy, not necessarily with an IFS therapist if the situation isn't too dramatic.
Personally I am not really fond of Sharon Eckstein's drawing style, but the illustrations support the text in a wonderful way nevertheless.
Reading Holmes and Earley both together gave me an even broader introduction to this wonderful parts work. It is my intention to keep studying in this direction.

Great therapy model

Great Book, the Interfamily Systems (IFS) therapy model made an incredible change in my life, and I continue to evolve.

Like with any therapy though, it's best applied if you are concurrently in actual therapy with a counselor. But you can still make amazing things happen in your life with just the book. Just make sure you practice what it tells you!
