Terribly boring and outdated

This text was assigned for a Compensensation course I took in 2011. The teacher could certainly have selected a better book. I'm surprised that this book has continually updated editions, yet the examples used in the book are so very oudated (ie: from the 90's and early 2000's). A LOT has changed in the economy and the workplace since then to the extent that the data from a decade or more ago is not nearly as relevant as current data would be. Also, this book is not organized very well, it is really written like a book - but not like a text book at all. That is to say that the individual concepts are not structured in any different way. So, everything blends together, and it is hard to tell what is important to pay more attention to, and what is more background information. For example, when new word definitions are introduced, they are lumped right into the body of the text - not bold printed or anything - so, you really have to hunt for them.
I'm sure the information is all spot on, but it is laid out so poorly, that it makes it arduous learning material.

This book met my academic needs. It contains a detailed glossary, index, and list of referenced contributors. I will be able to apply learned information in my everyday routines. I had read negative reviews of this textbook, but I chose to purchase the book based on classroom needs. The book was in excellent condition and was useful. Ultimately, I am glad to have purchased this book for my course.

About the Author
Jürgen Konrad Mai studied medicine in Freiburg, Germany, Vienna and UT Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, U.S.A. Student and Medical practices in Freiburg (Clinic for Neurosurgery), Berlin and Düsseldorf. Dissertation ("summa cum laude") and habilitation were awarded by the University of Düsseldorf: After a period as GP in private practice (Titisee-Neustadt) he became scientific assistant and senior assistant at the C. and O. Vogt-Institute for Brain Research, University of Düsseldorf (1972 - 1983) and 1983 Professor of Neuroanatomy at the Institute of Neuroanatomy, H.-Heine-University of Düsseldorf. He served as director of the Department of the Institute of Anatomy 1 until retirement in 2011.
The main research interests are (i) the structural and molecular anatomy of the mammalian brain, especially of the human brain and (ii) expression patterns and regulation of terminal carbohydrates in development, cell activation and disease (III) operation planning in stereotactic neurosurgery. He works on a "Digital Brain Atlas for Planning and Interindividual Registration of Targets in Deep Brain Stimulation" and on a "Spatial Information Management Resource for the Human Brain". J. K. Mai has edited the catalogue of human brain sections from the Vogt collection; he is author and editor of several books, e.g. the awarded "Atlas of the Human Brain" with CD-ROM (Academic Press/Elsevier, San Diego), "The Human Nervous System" (Academic Press/Elsevier, San Diego, Amsterdam, 3rd ed. 2012), Funktionelle Anatomie für Zahnmediziner (Quintessenz, Berlin, 2nd. ed. 2008; Sensi Divini (ital., engl., ger, russ. eds). Professor George Paxinos, AO (BA, MA, PhD, DSc) completed his BA at The University of California at Berkeley, his PhD at McGill University, and spent a postdoctoral year at Yale University. He is the author of almost 50 books on the structure of the brain of humans and experimental animals, including The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates, now in its 7th Edition, which is ranked by Thomson ISI as one of the 50 most cited items in the Web of Science. Dr. Paxinos paved the way for future neuroscience research by being the first to produce a three-dimensional (stereotaxic) framework for placement of electrodes and injections in the brain of experimental animals, which is now used as an international standard. He was a member of the first International Consortium for Brain Mapping, a UCLA based consortium that received the top ranking and was funded by the NIMH led Human Brain Project. Dr. Paxinos has been honored with more than nine distinguished awards throughout his years of research, including: The Warner Brown Memorial Prize (University of California at Berkeley, 1968), The Walter Burfitt Prize (1992), The Award for Excellence in Publishing in Medical Science (Assoc Amer Publishers, 1999), The Ramaciotti Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research (2001), The Alexander von Humbolt Foundation Prize (Germany 2004), and more.

Incredibly Comprehensive and Stimuating

"The Book Before Printing" by David Deringer is more than a book for bibliophiles: it is a mind-bogglingly comprehensive history of the roots of our common intellectual culture. From the oldest fragment of an Egyptian book c.2600 BCE, through clay tablets, papyrus, leather and parchment scrolls, to codices (that is, books as we have come to know them) in the early centuries of the Common Era, from prehistoric and non-literate symbolic/memnonic schemes, through early writing systems of Africa and Asia, to alphabets and scripts, Diringer examines every bit of evidence that was available up to the early 50's, when the book was written, to reveal archeological, cultural, linguistic, and religious trends through the millenia, and how scribes functioned, in their various settings, to bring us what remains of of distant literary past. He delves into the remotest corners of the globe for unexpected insights and manuscripts. Illustrations are abundant and well-described. I can only wonder what an edition updated to include all the most recent discoveries would be like. Probably huge! But even as it is,this book is a goldmine of information, and a feast for the mind.

An Exceedingly Convenient Reference!

The chief value of this work is in its collection of photographs of rare and unique manuscripts and its mass of empirical data; therefore this effort of Dr. David Diringer - 'THE BOOK BEFORE PRINTING: Ancient, Medieval, and Oriental (c.1953, 1982), becomes a nice compendium of evidence rather than a plausible theory of the development of the modern book.
Indeed this author's use of the word 'book' to designate any written material is a source of ambiguity as Dr. Diringer further refined his definition of a book to only the written word found "on perishible material such as wood, leather, or papyrus" (p. 48). So according to this author, only the written word found on clay, rolls, scrolls, leather parchments, linen, and waxed boards up to and including the codex are books - but not stone tablets, cave etchings, monument markings or metal stampings.
Though other studies begin their histories of the book with the codex (e.g. THE CODEX by Dr. Roberts; and THE BIRTH OF THE CODEX by C. H. Roberts), this author's extension of his book definition back to the furthest reaches of human civilization had inadvertently provided the reader with such a broad survey of data that few students will not be instructed by the many well chosen photographs of the rare and ancient manuscripts the author collected to use as examples of books.
In fact, the sheer volume of the photocopied documents almost compelled a reader to turn another page. In chronological order, each photocopy of a scroll, parchment, or codex coincided with Dr. Diringer's explanation of a period in a country's ancient history in which that document was produced. (This is a point where the author's expertise in writing tended to displace his main theme of book history). Yet some documents have achieved such a mythical quality, as 'Beowulf' or the 'Iliad' that it is striking to see a clear, legible photocopy on a following page.
Dr. Diringer made his work further interesting by juxtaposing several copies of ancient manuscripts for either penmanship, language, material, or size comparison. The sheer beauty and antiquity of some of these manuscripts, such as 'The Book of Kells', or the 15th century illuminated copy of 'Chaucer', and the clay Summerian tablet of the 'Hammurabi Law Code' written in cuneiform, are magnificent.
Originally published as THE HAND PRODUCED BOOK (c. 1953); THE BOOK BEFORE PRINTING is not so much a history of the book as it is many histories of the written word. Containing few mistakes (I found one spelling error on page 75; and the original title is still extant on top of each text page) Dr. Diringer had produced an excellent and valuable reference tool for the general reader as well as the scholar. If you need to choose a subject topic for an English, History, Archaeological, or palaeological dissertation then THE BOOK BEFORE PRINTING might help you in that choice. So even if you don't believe that a scroll is a book, Dr. David Diringer's work is still worth reading.

This is a reprint of Diringer's "The Hand-produced Book". If you like books, you will LOVE this. You will beat yourself on the head and say, "Where has it been all my life?"
Diringer wrote "The Alphabet" and "The Illuminated Book", as well. All of these are easily accessible to the educated layman, and each is a rollicking good time. Alphabet and Illuminated are out of print. I found each of the 3 titles through the interlibrary loan program, but it would be a groove to actually own them.
Diringer is erudite, with a charming style. The illustrations in all the books are excellent.

Making the Perfect Housewife Parts One and Two are the best Domina Dixon books so far that I have read (7 plus the co-authored one). That Diane's shoe could have that impact and result is marvelous, but it seems so blatantly obvious that Melanie has some huge lessons still to learn before she can be considered the perfect housewife. About the Author

Redwood Kardon, who devised and wrote the first Code Check, is a former electrician and building inspector for the city of Oakland, CA. Coauthor Douglas Hansen is a general contractor and certified combination inspector with over 30 years of field experience. Both authors present seminars and classes nationwide on a wide variety of building topics. Paddy Morrissey, former senior illustrator of CornerHardware.com, has been the sole illustrator for the Code Check series since its inception.

Useful but beware

I use these Code Checks constantly as a quick easy reference to navigate through the numerous, often confusing and misleading, codes. But it's important that a contractor or homeowner know that they are using the latest or applicable code version. I find it sad that the author does not tell you on the cover or in the description, which version of each code this book covers so I will provide that information here.

I also think the publisher should sell updated sections when that appropriate code is updated. I have contacted them and they do not offer updates so you may be better off buying the individual Code Check books and replacing each when the new code is out.

it is not complete as the title suggests

It is a good book but, it frequently refers you back to the main code check book for the service you are working on e.g. in plumbing it will refer you to the code check plumbing book for complete information. had I to do over again I would buy the individual books.

Handy All-in-One Reference on Residential Building Codes

This is a handy composite easy-to-use reference book of the four major building codes covering building, electrical, plumbing and HVAC. It is for residential buildings.

Previously, the Code Check series was (and still is) issued for each of the individual codes noted above. This guide combines all four into a condensed and smaller spiral bound hard cover book. It is easier to carry and use if you need to take a quick peek at more than one of the various building code references.

It is an easy guide for contractors, home inspectors, and others interested in the current rules and regulations as they pertain on a national basis. It is not meant as a substitute for your local code regs however.

I believe both formats have a use and am glad they came out with this newer composite or complete version of all residential codes into one small book.

An individual contractor or tradesperson might appreciate the individual CODE CHECK flip chart style guide better. As they cover one of the 4 various building codes, they are slightly larger and much more durable than the composite book. They are published on damage-resistant plastic coated card stock and impervious to moisture damage. They are also larger, yet thinner and are quicker to use as they flip open with their sections all summarized on the cover.

The composite book is smaller, yet thicker. While it is also spiral bound, the paper it is printed on is not tear or moisture-resistant. The value for the composite is superior in that it provides most, if not all of the same information as the individual Code Checks. It is also much less expensive buying the composite compared to buying the four code checks separately. The pages are smaller and more difficult to read if one relies upon glasses in order to read.

The other glaring detraction is the information for the Electrical section. Perhaps the book came out a few months too early. Everything in the Building, HVAC, and Plumbing sections is up-to-date. The Electrical section still contains the information from the 2002/2005 National Electrical Code. Not the newest 2008 version. I would imagine however, that the next edition of the composite "Complete" Code Check book would contain the latest info. Many, if not most local jurisdictions tend to operate off the older NEC, so it may be of little consequence at this point anyway.

One other small observation, is that if you lend out your code check "complete", then you lend all of it out together. Unlike the individual publications. Also, it is not as durable, so if one does lend it out, it may not hold up in the long run, unlike the other larger plastic-coated booklets.

It is still a wise investment for the money. And a great way to have all the major code R&Rs in your hand for a quick and easy reference.

One other note, the publisher on their website also offers several downloads free of charge. One is the "California" Building Code. Another is changes or errors and ommissions in the Code Check Complete. It is after all in its first edition. However the mistakes are kept to a minimum.

About the Author
Yoni Kahn is a PhD student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in theoretical high-energy particle physics. During his undergraduate studies at Northwestern University, he worked on dark matter phenomenology and spent a summer at Jefferson Lab doing research in nuclear physics. He is currently working on the DarkLight experiment to detect a new force of nature, as well as other experiments related to dark matter detection. In his spare time he is a freelance French hornist in the Boston area. Adam Anderson is a PhD student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in experimental particle physics, working on direct dark matter detection and neutrino physics. He is currently a member of the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search, doing data analysis and studying how dark-matter-style detectors can be applied to other measurements in particle physics and astrophysics. His undergraduate studies were in physics and mathematics at the University of Chicago.

Too many errors

The book can serve as a useful reminder of the topics that come up on the GRE but it is full of ERRORS.

Most of the circuit equations are WRONG.

Some examples:
Page 87 equations 2.71 2.72 and 2.75 are wrong.

It is not Ceq = SUM 1/Ci. The right answer 1/Ceq = SUM 1/Ci

Page 89 equation 2.82 is also wrong.

It is not I = V/R = exp (-R/L t). The right answer is I = V/R - V/R exp (-R/L) t

Comprehensive cover of topics but riddled with errors

The book covers the topics that are required for the GRE comprehensibly. As the authors mention on their website, this book should not be used to learn the physical concepts but it provides a convenient review.

However, it is so riddled with errors that one needs to double check most statements for their correctness. Many errors are due to negligence (typos, units not matching in equations). Unfortunately, some statements are physically wrong (e.g. the authors seem to have forgotten that charge is quantised when writing sample questions).

In conclusion, the book can serve as a useful reminder of the topics that come up on the GRE but it is not suitable as a stand-alone study guide.
