Tokyo on Foot: Travels in the City's Most Colorful Neighborhoods, by Florent Chavouet

This prize-winning book is both an illustrated tour of a Tokyo rarely seen in Japan travel guides and an artist's warm, funny, visually rich, and always entertaining graphic memoir.

Florent Chavouet, a young graphic artist, spent six months exploring Tokyo while his girlfriend interned at a company there. Each day he would set forth with a pouch full of color pencils and a sketchpad, and visit different neighborhoods. This stunning book records the city that he got to know during his adventures. It isn't the Tokyo of packaged tours and glossy guidebooks, but a grittier, vibrant place, full of ordinary people going about their daily lives and the scenes and activities that unfold on the streets of a bustling metropolis.

Here you find business men and women, hipsters, students, grandmothers, shopkeepers, policemen, and other urban types and tribes in all manner of dress and hairstyles. A temple nestles among skyscrapers; the corner grocery anchors a diverse assortment of dwellings, cafes, and shops—often tangled in electric lines.

The artist mixes styles and tags his pictures with wry comments and observations. Realistically rendered advertisements or posters of pop stars contrast with cartoon sketches of iconic objects or droll vignettes, like a housewife walking her pet pig, a Godzilla statue in a local park, and an urban fishing pond that charges 400 yen per half hour.

This very personal guide to Tokyo is organized by neighborhood with hand-drawn maps that provide an overview of each neighborhood, but what really defines them is what caught the artist's eye and attracted his formidable drawing talent. Florent Chavouet begins his introduction by observing that, "Tokyo is said to be the most beautiful of ugly cities." With wit, a playful sense of humor, and the multicolor pencils of his kit, he sets aside the question of urban ugliness or beauty and captures the Japanese essence of a great city in this truly vital portrait.

Review
"…hand-drawn maps…provide information about the various neighborhoods in the city — hence; it can prove to be very helpful for your trip planning." —I Am Aileen blog

"This stunning book records the city that [Florent Chavouet] got to know during his adventures, a gritty, vibrant place, full of ordinary people going about their daily lives. Realistically rendered city views or posters of pop stars contrast with cartoon sketches of iconic objects or droll vignettes…With wit, a playful sense of humor, and the colored pencils of his kit, Chavouet sets aside the question of urban ugliness or beauty and captures the Japanese essence of a great city." —Japan Today

"His drawings are so wonderfully idiosyncratic and so beautifully detailed that what must have been a labor of love for him is no less a labor of delightful artistic genius." —Publishers Weekly starred review

"[Tokyo on Foot] will make readers with wanderlust wish to drop their everyday responsibilities and trek through a foreign city. It will appeal to the armchair traveler who yearns for a bit of the exotic, the wanderer who wants to someday visit the Land of the Rising Sun, and, indeed, anyone who appreciates the marriage of grit and beauty, self-deprecating wit, and losing oneself in good pictures for a while." —ForeWord Reviews

"From what Chavouet saw, did, ate—bugs, festivals, storefronts, a fake French mansion, random drinks and snacks—his illustrations catch perfect little details you'll never find in any guide book. His myriad of people caught in the midst of their everyday lives are undoubtedly the book's highlight. […] By the time he's back in his native France, he's got an award-winning, fascinating book that surely makes for ideal reading for both armchair tourists and peripatetic travelers alike." —Book Dragon (Smithsonian Institute)

"The book captures the feel and spirit of the Japanese metropolis in comical sketches, sparse writings and whimsical, hand-drawn city maps. The book is a diary of Chavouet's six months in Tokyo. And, it's worth the money, at least for people who can appreciate Chavouet's observations on life in Japan and who can enjoy his artwork, which is intriguing, if somewhat reminiscent of classic Mad Magazine drawings. Chavouet depicts the everyday sights of Tokyo—much of which are universal sights in homogeneous Japan—in a way that's so detailed that you feel as if you can walk into the pages. It's almost like the feeling you get when you see one of those picture-perfect towns made of Legos. "—About.com

"…as for Chavouet—colorful, farcical, artistically superior Chavouet—his way of seeing Japan is insightful and entertaining for over two hundred pages. The execution is confident—a positive side-effect of it having no agenda but to represent his individual experience." —Axiom Magazine

"This is the first book by Mr. Chavouet in which he chronicled his adventures in Japan with his gorgeous hand-drawn pictures and in writing. […] This book can be enjoyed by anyone who is interested in Japan, especially Tokyo. As well as those who like quality drawings of people in their daily lives." —Tokyo Five blog

Clever insight into Tokyo the city, not Tokyo the tourist destination
By C. E. Stevens
I almost didn't pick up this book, with its dull "Tokyo on Foot" title ... which, in addition to being pretty generic, isn't even accurate--as we learn in several amusing anecdotes, this is actually "Tokyo on Bicycle"! However, the whimsical sketches on the front and back cover grabbed my attention, and as soon as I started flipping through the pages I was hooked. I lived in Japan for two years, one of them in Yokohama (so I am quite familiar with Tokyo), and this captured the experience of living in the Tokyo area perfectly: hunched over grannies, aggressive insects, old bicycles, expensive fruit, taxi drivers, police officers who seem to strive to be either your best friend or worst enemy, a mix of curiosity and suspicion toward the gaijin who actually are *living* in Japan as opposed to simply passing through as tourists, etc., etc. One of the only major omissions I can think of that a resident of Tokyo will notice is the absence of trains, subways, etc. (this is "Tokyo on Foot"/by bike, after all).

Note, however, that this is not really the "tourist's Tokyo". The fact that this book starts off in nondescript Machiya (an area of Tokyo warranting only a few scant sentences even in the Japanese language version of Wikipedia) should be a clue. If you pick up this book hoping to see sketches of Meiji Shrine, the Imperial Palace, or Asakusa's Sensoji Temple, you will be sorely disappointed. Likewise, this is not the traditional culture connoisseur or otaku's guide to Tokyo--no tea ceremonies or kimono, and anime/manga make only a brief appearance. As a result, while I think this book will be of interest to anyone with an interest in Japan, I think this will be of the most interest to people who have experience living in Japan, the Tokyo area in particular (although much will be familiar to people who lived in other parts of Japan, particularly the urban areas). The author shines in his attention to the little details and everyday events that combine to make up that sometimes-thrilling, sometimes-frustrating, never-boring experience that is living in Japan. For such people, this book is a 5-star experience--it will bring back vivid memories of your time living in Japan (and for the artistically inclined, it will likely leave you kicking yourself for not thinking of doing this book first!). For those who have been to Japan only on short trips as tourists, 4 stars: I'm sure this will still be enjoyable, although many of the details will go unappreciated. For everyone else, depending on your level of interest in Japan, this may or may not be of interest--flip through a few pages first, and I imagine you will either be hooked (if so, buy it!) or bored (if so, move on!).

Personally, for me as a former "gaijin-in-residence" and Japanophile longing for an opportunity to go back, I found this book to be delightful and I poured over the details and the maps as I reminisced about my days living in Japan. There are many books on Tokyo and Japan in general, but this is a truly unique and special work ... I am glad to have the chance to add it to my bookshelf, and am happy to recommend it to others.

great peek into non-touristy tokyo . / say no to the kindle ed. though
By autumnchild83
I love this book! Fun notes and observations makes it feel like you're on the trip with chavouet. This book is a pictorial diary of the author's time roaming tokyo while his girlfriend got a job there for a few months. If you buy this book thinking it's a guide, you'll be sorely mistaken. The guy drew his observations and comments on his experience. The style is relatable, cartoon caricatures in color pencils. Fun look through and study of some smaller "everyday" neighborhoods most tourists overlook when they're there to see see see the sights! The artist also concentrated on the area of 1 train line which he frequent which is nice there's a concentration. Tokyo is huge, the author is neither an expert on japan nor claim this as a guide. It just a beautiful peek into his adventures and experiences while living abroad. The hardcopy is a nice book to have. To reminisce perhaps he capture your own thoughts in pictures so well or just to see what some things you might be overlooking if you're heading out there yourself. It's a great inspiration piece, too.

NOW FOR THE KINDLE EDITION: I wish I saw the review for the kindle edition sooner! It SUX! I have the
8.9 fire HDX and the pages are basically an image,, A LOW RESOLUTION at that, quality degrade blur and pixelated when I try to zoom in to read certain comments caption. I need to find out how to return this kindle version, sigh more work. Actually quite annoyed right now.

Intriguing & Informative
By Nicole
The book is very detailed and contains many different visual ideas of Tokyo. It is know for the mapping and illustrations. My first impression of the book was very exciting. However, as I began to go further in the book, I was not as excited as I hoped. The illustrations were on the whole, above average, but nothing very unique. The idea is great! I did like the idea of information being placed about where the author had traveled and who he had come across while living in Japan. The other plus is the amount of work you get. I can't imagine how long this took him in terms of illustrating it. It reminds how a good piece of work really does take time. I would recommend this people who are interested in off-grid way of looking at Tokyo. It is one I will keep on shelf, but will probably never open again.

Review
Praise for Paris for One and Other Stories:

“Moyes is in fine, cheeky form in this collection of short fiction, deploying the wit and charm that animates Me Before You and her other popular novels. The title novella offers a vicarious jolt of Parisian romance, while shorter stories deliver pithy insights into the joys and woes of marriage, ending with delightful twists.” --People

“An old-fashioned, feel-good love story. . .  ["Paris for One" is] as light as a French pastry. It will make you smile and even, maybe, sigh. It’s as if Moyes has booked a vacation and is taking us along. To Paris. Amour! . . . Think of these short fictions as palate cleansers after the sweet, tasty Parisian treat Moyes so deliciously serves up.” –USA Today

“Paris for One and Other Stories. . . [is]  dreamy escapism, a book you can curl up with and easily finish over a weekend, with or without a glass of wine.” –Miami Herald

"[A] charming novella. . . [and] a collection of short stories rounds out the work and adds up to an engaging way to spend fall's first chilly afternoon.”—Good Housekeeping

“These stories are a treat—quick, short nibbles of Moyes’ character genius, storytelling charisma, and writing grace, plus a new, intriguing format for the author, with the occasional surprising twist.” --Kirkus Reviews

"Vibrant. . .Bold, humorous and genuine, the stories in this collection are classic Moyes." —Publishers Weekly

Praise for After You:

"Jojo Moyes has a hit with After You.”—USA Today

“Think Elizabeth Bennet after Darcy’s eventual death; Alice after Gertrude; Wilbur after Charlotte. The 'aftermath' is a subject most writers understandably avoid, but Moyes has tackled it and given readers an affecting, even entertaining female adventure tale about a broken heroine who ultimately rouses herself and falls in love again, this time with the possibilities in her own future..” —Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air, NPR

“The genius of Moyes . . . [is that she] peers deftly into class issues, social mores, and complicated relationships that raise as many questions as they answer. And yet there is always resolution. It’s not always easy, it’s not always perfect, it’s sometimes messy and not completely satisfying. But sometimes it is.” —Bobbi Dumas, NPR.org

“Charming.”— People

“Expect tears and belly laughs from Me Before You’s much anticipated sequel.” —Cosmopolitan

“Moyes is at her most charming here, writing with a sense of humorous affection about family dynamics among working-class Brits. . . a Maeve Binchy for the 21st century.” —Kirkus Reviews

“[A] heart-tugger.” —Good Housekeeping

“Like its predecessor [Me Before You], After You is a comic and breezy novel that also tackles bigger, more difficult subjects, in this case grief and moving on. . . . We all lose what we love at some point, but in her poignant, funny way, Moyes reminds us that even if it’s not always happy, there is an ever after.” —Miami Herald

“Once again, Moyes delivers a heart-wrenching and relatable book about love and loss that will stay with you long after you’ve finished.” —InStyle.com

“Moyes wisely knows that life-changing events don’t always change our lives for the better. . . . After You may not be the sequel you expect, but it is the sequel you needed.” —Entertainment Weekly

“After You is an immersive experience, inviting readers back into the homes of the characters they fell in love with in Me Before You. They’ll experience the mourning that follows a devastating loss, and the glimmers of hope that propel the brokenhearted forward.” —BookPage

“[After You] left me thrilled by the possibilities of fiction to entertain and inform, and astounded by [Moyes’s] deep well of talent and imagination.” —Bask magazine

I did like it, but....
By achoo
I really liked the first story, Paris for One. It's more like a novella, I guess - it's a little over 100 pages long (this is on my kindle so I'm guessing it's the same for the hard copy). I loved the story and, as usual, loved Moyes' writing style.

The first story is followed by 8 short stories that were good, but felt like something I would have read over a blog instead of paying money for. I kind of felt gypped after finishing it in less than 3 hours.

So while I enjoyed all the stories, I wouldn't go and recommend it to all my friends like I have every other JoJo Moye's novel I've read.

Jojo Moyes is one of my favorite writers. When I realize this was a collection of stories and novellas, initially I was disapointed. But very quickly I was engrossed in all of them. She writes the most intriguing settings and piles on the hardship for the narrator. I loved each of there and would read it again.

While I enjoy Jojo Moyes books this one was not up to her normal standard. It came acrossed as a "rushed" series of short stories instead of a fully developed storyline. I hope her next book is up to her normal stellar style.

All that changes the day a woman arrives on his doorstep holding a baby girl – the daughter he never knew he had. The last thing he's ready for is fatherhood. Until one quirk of fate changes everything. . .. With the help of a caring divorcee next door, and the warmth of neighbours who band together to help, Daniel finds himself growing up fast as he takes little Samara in and raises her as his own. As Daniel puts aside his youthful, partying ways, he starts to finally grow up and discovers he just might be falling in love with his neighbour, a mother herself. As fatherhood changes his life forever, he finds himself finally understanding what truly matters in life: faith, love and family.

About the Author
Starlette Guiao, a professional banker, wife, and mother, always loved to write. She kept journals, wrote freelance articles for a suburban newspaper, and loves nothing better than to spend every ounce of her free time writing short stories. Guiao, a Goan from Mumbai, earned a business degree from India and is currently working as a banker in the United Arab Emirates. Anytime she sees a blank page or a blank screen, she loves to fill it up with words. For years, she struggled with the question of whether or not to pursue a writing career, choosing to share her work only with family and friends. Eventually, she decided this was the story she wanted to write. “It really resonated with me,” she said. “I felt this story of a father taking care of his daughter and the entire neighborhood helping to raise her just felt like something I needed to write. I grew up in Mumbai, and I think the feeling of community there is strong.”

I liked the story
By Philip
I liked the story. As a father I am always pleased when a parent does the right thing for their babies. The end did feel slightly rushed to me. I do think it is a story that people would relate to.

This book is simply incredible! I have read many self-help books over the years, and having been in the business world for all of those years, I have never seen both areas (self-help and career) integrated so well in one place. 100 Years of The Best American Short Stories, by Lorrie Moore, Heidi Pitlor

The Best American Short Stories is the longest running and best-selling series of short fiction in the country. For the centennial celebration of this beloved annual series, master of the form Lorrie Moore selects forty stories from the more than two thousand that were published in previous editions. Series editor Heidi Pitlor recounts behind-the-scenes anecdotes and examines, decade by decade, the trends captured over a hundred years. Together, the stories and commentary offer an extraordinary guided tour through a century of literature with what Moore calls “all its wildnesses of character and voice.”

These forty stories represent their eras but also stand the test of time. Here is Ernest Hemingway’s first published story and a classic by William Faulkner, who admitted in his biographical note that he began to write “as an aid to love-making.” Nancy Hale’s story describes far-reaching echoes of the Holocaust; Tillie Olsen’s story expresses the desperation of a single mother; James Baldwin depicts the bonds of brotherhood and music. Here is Raymond Carver’s “minimalism,” a term he disliked, and Grace Paley’s “secular Yiddishkeit.” Here are the varied styles of Donald Barthelme, Charles Baxter, and Jamaica Kincaid. From Junot Díaz to Mary Gaitskill, from ZZ Packer to Sherman Alexie, these writers and stories explore the different things it means to be American.

Moore writes that the process of assembling these stories allowed her to look “thrillingly not just at literary history but at actual history — the cries and chatterings, silences and descriptions of a nation in flux.” 100 Years of The Best American Short Stories is an invaluable testament, a retrospective of our country’s ever-changing but continually compelling literary artistry.

LORRIE MOORE, after many years as a professor of creative writing at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, is now the Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of English at Vanderbilt University. Moore has received honors for her work, among them the Irish Times International Fiction Prize and a Lannan Foundation fellowship, as well as the PEN/Malamud Award and the Rea Award for her achievement in the short story. Her most recent novel, A Gate at the Stairs, was short-listed for the 2010 Orange Prize for Fiction and for the PEN/Faulkner Award, and her most recent story collection, Bark, was short-listed for the Story Prize and the Frank O’Connor Award.

HEIDI PITLOR is a former senior editor at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and has been the series editor of The Best American Short Stories since 2007. She is the author of the novels The Birthdays and The Daylight Marriage.

"She remembers that everything she remembers is not necessarily true."
By Fairbanks Reader - Bonnie Brody
This collection of short stories proclaims to be the best American short stories of the past 100 years. It takes a lot of hubris to cull and choose stories published over a century and state, with surety, that these surpass all others in quality and attributes, The book is edited by Lorrie Moore, whose short stories I sometimes gravitate towards and sometimes don't connect with. The co-editor is Heidi Pitlor who edits an annual short story collection. On the whole, the stories selected for this collection are good, some are superb, and others left me shaking my head in puzzlement as to why they were included. It's easy to pull things apart but, for this review, I will focus on those stories I loved, some of which I may have read previously and others that are new to me but I will never forget.

The collection is arranged chronologically and there is a short description of each time period with a focus on the types of stories that were prominent during that era. I found this helpful and learned a lot about what was published and who might have been influenced by whom. There are a total of 39 stories, the first published in 1917 and the last published in 2014. Of the 39, seven stand out high above the rest. A few of these are old friends and some of them I have never read before.

Edna Ferber's story, 'The Day Old Dog', published in 1917, is very different from other stories of hers that I've read. It tells about a man's deathbed promise to his mother and, because of this promise - to take care of his sisters until they marry, he loses his own chance to marry and have a family. He continue to have dreams of the the life he may have led but they dissipate as time forces him head to head with reality.

Nancy Hale published 'Those Are As Brothers' in 1942. I had never heard of her before reading this story. Written in the aftermath of World War II, the concept of shared terror is explored, along with the power of strength and connection.

James Baldwin published 'Sonny's Blues' in 1958. It is about two African-American brothers who grow up in Harlem and appear to go in very separate directions after World War II. What touched me most in this story is its examination of the connections made without words - some through music, some through the collective unconscious, and some through inner promises we make to ourselves.

Mona Simpson published 'Lawns' in 1986. It is a brilliant exploration of the impact of sexual abuse on an adolescent girl. As a clinical social worker, I have not read anything that comes close to examining the inner world of a child/woman trying to make sense of an irrational life.

In 1995, Jamaica Kincaid published a story called 'Xuela'. In it, the birth date of an infant from Dominica corresponds to the day of her mother's death. The child spends her life wondering what her mother might have been like, what is the true essence of her father, and what comprises her own sense of self.

'What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank' is one of my favorite short stories. Published in 2012 by Nathan Englander, it addresses a 'ritual game' that exists in many jewish families. In this game, the family discusses who would be entrusted with their care and the care of their children if the Nazi's ever came to power again. In this story, two couples get together and the game leads to a startling realization for one of them.

'Diem Perdidi' by Julie Otsuka, published in 2012 is another one of my favorite stories. 'Diem Perdidi' means 'I lost the day' in Latin. This story is the most poignant and poetic in the collection. Narrated in first person, the reader is privy to the losses and gifts of dementia.

The stories in this book cover a variety of themes and topics. There does not appear to be a political bent, which I appreciate, and the 'political correctness' which is present in so much of today's collections does not appear to be present. For this, too, I am also thankful. It is obvious that the editors spent much time and thought choosing these stories and there are some gems in this collection.

Does More Than Recycle “The Greatest Hits”
    By M. JEFFREY MCMAHON
Lorrie Moore and Heidi Pitlor who compiled this collection have undertaken a rather ambitious task: To select a representation of presumably the best stories of the last 100 years. The task becomes even more daunting when you consider the college textbook industry offers dozens of similar anthologies.
My definition of an amazing story is that in one reading it has the “weight of a novel,” the complexity, density, and texture that you might find in a 300-page book. Such stories are evident in this collection: “The Enormous Radio” by John Cheever, “The Whole World Knows” by Eudora Welty, “I Stand Here Ironing” by Tillie Olsen, “Sonny’s Blues” by Sonny Baldwin, “The Conversion of the Jews” by Philip Roth, “Everything That Rises Must Converge” by Flannery O’Conner, “Pigeon Feathers” by John Updike, “Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?” by Raymond Carver, "Friend of My Youth" by Alice Munro, “Communist” by Richard Ford, “What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank” by Nathan Englander, “The Semplica-Girl Diaries” by George Saunders.
There were some glaring omissions. For a collection that represents the last 100 years, I’d want to see “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Conner, “The Rich Brother” by Tobias Wolff, and “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” by Raymond Carver.
It seems the “canon” stories of some of the authors have been omitted in place of lesser-known ones, perhaps because the editors either thought their story selections were superior and/or they wanted the book to have some freshness to it and not simply recycle the “greatest hits.”
I think their strategy is successful. The collection is both fresh and contains dozens of stories that have “the weight of a novel” inside them.
Perhaps Lorrie Moore is too modest to include one of her own stories in this collection. She needs to be in here. One of those “novel” stories I defined earlier is embodied by her masterpiece “Real Estate” from her collection Birds of America. I wish that story were in this collection. In any event, this is a very successful compilation and I would consider using it for one of my college classes.

Comparison of "100 Years" and "Oxford Book of American Short Stories"
    By Dame Droiture
I ordered this in order to consider it as the required text for a short story course I will be teaching at the college level in a few months. The other book I am considering is _The Oxford Book of American Short Stories_, edited by Joyce Carol Oates. I am an Americanist by discipline, so both books would seem to "fit" well with me in this respect. Admittedly, though, I am fairly new to the short story form, insofar as teaching (I usually focus on novels and novellas), so I wanted to find something that would please both me and my students in breadth and variety of theme.

Both "100 Years" and the Oxford book have a similar price-point -- between $15-$20; it seems very reasonable to request students to invest in a book costing under $25, particularly one that will be used for the entire semester. But there are two things that are tipping me over to "100 Years," as opposed to the Oxford: the first is the introduction in each volume. Whereas Joyce Carol Oates' introduction is short and perhaps a bit scholarly, Lorrie Moore's intro is, on the whole, very readable, lively, and engaging. It rings with life, reality, and importantly, a connection with what is common (as opposed to high-brow). "100 Years" is also very physically lightweight (at least the copy I received, so this may not be true of the hardcover currently offered on Amazon); this is something I *do* consider when ordering books for students, knowing that all of us need to lug the material back and forth to campus. The Oxford edition is like a brick.

I cannot compare the two much further, though, given the differing story selections: Oxford chooses from hundreds of years of work; "100 Years" is obviously much narrower in chronology. I do imagine "100 Years" to have a much more modernist flair -- this volume is missing, for example, the lesser-known stories of writers like Hawthorne, Irving, Poe, and Melville, all of whom have, if not only a gothic touch, then at least engage in a newly-industrializing nation.

"100 Years," as you can see by the table of contents reprinted on the product page, begins with Ferber, Anderson, and Hemingway. Its stories offer very different sets of concerns, and thus a very different kind of appeal from a more over-arching volume like the Oxford. (And yet I should note here that Joyce Carol Oates, in the Oxford, has deliberately chosen many lesser-known / underdog stories -- some I haven't even heard of, even though they were written by famous novelists like Hawthorne.) But as in any story edition, it's tough to pick and choose what to include out of so many possibilities.

Both editions of stories have a short (paragraph-long) introduction to the author/story before the story begins -- a useful, if not required, addition.

I think there's something to be said for each volume, and insofar as teaching them, you would have a very different course for each. In a way, the Oxford book is very traditional: it captures stories from a (relative) height of story-writing days when books were still (relatively) expensive and people got much of their literature from newspapers and weekly journals like Godey's or The Atlantic. These stories were/are popular, and read (and loved) by thousands (i.e. Melville's "Paradise/Tartarus" short). "100 Years," by contrast, is modernist, post-modernist, and contemporary. You'll likely see more engagement with issues like feminism, depression, war, and (dare I say) existential inquiry. Moving toward more recent times in "100 Years," you'll also see stories that have likely only been encountered by short-story enthusiasts. (When is the last time *you* read a short story -- online, in a magazine?)

I do think the "100 Years" timeline is artificially limiting. And whereas I expect an equal representation of each decade (a decade itself being an artificial divide), I find one story for 1915-1920, and six (!) stories for 2000-2010. (Another reviewer has also pointed this out.) For this, 4 stars instead of 5.

It's still a tough decision between the two, though, for there are treasures in both.

    Review

"It's not hard to see why this book would be so popular. The subject alone is probably one of the most variably practiced within haematology, with many different possible strategies to manage each situation - often with each strategy being as valid as the next....Consultative Hemostasis and Thrombosis is wonderfully evidence based and clear on what has and has not been discovered in trials, and the shortcomings of those studies...This is certainly a good investment, particularly if your practice is outside a major teaching hospital, with limited access to a sub-specialist in coagulation. The online access to the entire text via th ExpertConsult.com website is just the icing on the cake."
