Outstanding

This is a must in any urgent care/ER ....photos are excellent and just the right amount of written text to have a working review of almost everything one would see in these settings.It has always been easier to learn info. when it is hooked up to a photo. This is one of those that should and could be read cover to cover by any primary care/ER physician. It expands your differential greatly. I'm ordering my second one tonite.

This is a must for all medical students, doctors, and even parents. I read one case a day during my medical education and it has provided many benefits. I have even used it to save two trips to the ER (because the treatments at the ER would have been fluids and pain medication).

About the Author
Nurudin Farah is the author of nine novels, including From a Crooked Rib, Links and his Blood in the Sun trilogy: Maps, Gifts, and Secrets. His novels have been translated into seventeen languages and have won numerous awards. Farah was named the 1998 laureate of the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, "widely regarded as the most prestigious international literary award after the Nobel" (The New York Times). Born in Baidoa, Somalia, he now lives in Cape Town, South Africa, with his wife and their children.

Somewhat Awkward and Lacking in Context

This slim novel by Somali writer Farah was originally published in 1970 but fell out of print until the widespread acclaim of his "Blood in the Sun" trilogy in the late '90s. Written in 1968, the book is set during the months leading up to Somalia's independence in 1960. Like a great deal of postcolonial African fiction available in translation, its primary theme is the role of women in society. The story is written from the perspective of Ebla (perhaps so named because at the time of the writing in 1968, Italian archeologists had just identified the site of ancient city of the same name in Syria), an 18-year-old nomad woman who flees her rural settlement when she learns of her impending marriage to a middle-aged man. In doing so, she is spurning the traditional values of her culture -- perhaps foreshadowing for the societal changes that will come with independence and modernity.

Sneaking out of her hut in the wee hours, she flees without a plan, leaving her brother and grandfather behind. Her first stop is a small town (although quite large and bewildering to her), where she stays with a distant cousin. There, she cares for her cousin's pregnant wife and makes the acquaintance of a confident woman next door. Drawn into smuggling by her cousin and alerted to his plan to sell her off as a bride, she flees again, this time to Mogadishu with the nephew of the neighbor. Here, life is even more confusing, as she becomes his bride. When he leaves for several months training in Italy, she must rely on another self-sufficient older woman in her building. She somewhat passively reacts to this abandonment by allowing herself to be propelled into the arms of yet another man, who pays her for the distinction of becoming his "wife".

The cultural mechanics of all this are somewhat confusing to the non-native reader and a certain amount of annotation would certainly help this almost 40-year-old book. For example, some background on the quasi-Islamic practice of informal "temporary" marriages at the time would provide some much-needed context for some of Ebla's actions. So while the broad theme of Ebla's treatment as just another "beast" or "cattle" subject to the whim of the men around her is evident, I suspect there's a good deal of nuance that lost along the way. Written when Farah was only in his early 20s, the English prose is rather awkward and makes for choppy reading. While certainly of interest to those interested in feminism in Africa, those seeking a more accessible introduction to Farah's work might be better off trying his more recent novels, Links and Knots, which are set in Mogadishu during and after the American peacekeeping efforts in the early '90s.

Independence . . .

Written 40 years ago, this early novel from Somali writer Nuruddin Farah tells of an independent but uneducated young woman who leaves her tribe rather than marry a man she does not care for and flees to a life in town - first a rural center called Belet Wene and then to the city of Mogadishu. It is near the time of Somalia's independence from Italy, and her unsophisticated and limited grasp of what independence means for her may well represent the author's vision of Somalia, about to steer its own course in the modern world - a path that has led, as we know, to much political and economic discord.

Ebla, the central character, takes shelter first with a cousin, whose wife gives birth to a child in the first days of her arrival. In spite of her independence, Ebla often permits herself to be guided by decisions others make for her, which is much of the time. As a result, she marries a man she has met only once, and while her first husband is away for several months, she marries another man, who is himself already married (permissible for him in a Muslim culture) but to a battle-ax of a woman who thoroughly intimidates him.

In a picaresque style that varies between comedy and melodrama, the story focuses in passing on the conditions of being female in Somalia where, created from the "crooked rib" of Adam, a woman counts in Muslim law as only half a person, marriages are arranged for them, female circumcision is common, and only a clever, worldly woman can achieve a hard-won independence from dominance by men.

snapshots into culture

I have recently been interested in reading books from North Africa and the Middle East, both fiction/non-fiction, and this book was no disappointment for me. I enjoyed the snapshots into the culture of the region and the language was able to evoke great imagery during my reading of this. I lent this to my mother while she was visiting and she also lapped it up, we have very different tastes in literature, so I can see how this would reach a great audience. It can also be a great course book, this is how we used it, to open discussion on independence, freedom, and democratic values.

About the Author

Frank M. Carrano is a professor emeritus of computer science at the University of Rhode Island. He received the Ph.D. degree in computer science from Syracuse University in 1969. His interests include data structures, computer science education, social issues in computing, and numerical computation. Professor Carrano is particularly interested in the design and delivery of undergraduate courses in computer science. He has authored several well-known computer science textbooks for undergraduates.

Required Textbook for College

Though I bought this textbook for a a Java class, I haven't found a whole lot of use in it as I can just Google whatever I might need (for example the entire API library of java.AWT.) However, this text explains concepts and theory very well. I ended up buying the book instead of renting it and I believe it was a good decision. Whenever I'm doing a major programming assignment, I have this with me and open to the chapter for easy access. There's something encouraging about having a physical copy of a programming text in front of you.The book also comes with an access code, assuming it hasn't been scratched off, with great online video notes. Activate it through MyMathLab and not the way they tell you to. Good book. It's helping me pick up Java in a matter of months.

TAKEN, the second book in Christine Pope’s “Djinn Wars” series begins right after the first book leaves off and the book wastes no time before Jessica Monroe embarks on a dangerous mission to save Jace/Jasreel, the supernatural being she has come to love in his human form.
TAKEN deepens the mythology surrounding Pope’s djinn, and it’s an original take on a very old form of supernatural being. The book also sets larger events in motion as we meet other survivors, another “Chosen” and learn more about what the survivalists in Los Alamos are up to.
There’s a lot of action in this book, which reminded me a bit of Pope’s sci fi series, the GAIA CONSORTIUM where the romance in the book is set against an increasingly complex world of interplanetary political intrigue.
Jessica is a sympathetic heroine and in this book she really steps up—not just for herself and her lover but for the others she meets in this book. We know that she’ll face even greater trials before the series concludes but we feel confident that this newly empowered woman will find the strength to do what’s necessary.
This is a great second book for a series—continuing the story without any loss of energy.

Fast-paced adventure with complex relationships - Christine Pope at her best

(Spoilers for Chosen:) At the end of Chosen, Jessica finds out about the djinn: that most of them want to destroy all humans, and that about a thousand of them have chosen mates out of those immune to djinn-created virus: The Heat. With only a moment to reconcile all her new knowledge with the man she has come to love, he (Jasreel) is whisked away by men with Hummers and a dangerous black box. Though Jessica was a little more than ordinary in the first book, she overcomes her “reluctant heroine” status to meet the challenge of rescuing her beloved.

A romance writer in many genres, Pope excels in juggling the various relationship dynamics in the book. From the friendship between Jessica and fellow-Chosen Evony to interactions with the paramilitary group of human Immune who have captured two djinn, each relationship is unique and important. Of course, the romance is the most important part, and it is both earnest and magical.

After the somewhat drawn-out nature of Chosen, the pacing of Taken is everything I hoped it would be. It balances the minutia of the post-apocalyptic life with the urgency of knowing that there are two sets of enemies out there... something that becomes dangerously apparent as the book builds to a close to end on a bit of a cliffhanger and we anticipate Fallen, coming in early June.

(I was given a review copy with the understanding I'd write an honest review, and this book earned the five-star rating I couldn't give the first book in the series.)

I read the first book of the four books and was pleasantly surprised. It was good and different and left me wanting more. Subsequently, I read all four books. It is a very unusual story that kind of leaves your mind wondering if something so strange as what goes on in these books can really happen. In any event, the story is well written and thoroughly enjoyable.

About the Author

Michael Backes specializes in cannabis science and policy issues at a southern California consultancy, which maintains clients throughout the United States. He previously founded the first evidence-based medical cannabis dispensary. Backes is active with Project CBD, a non-profit educational service dedicated to promoting research into the medical utility of cannabidiol (a non-psychoactive cannabis molecule), the International Association for Cannabinoid Medicines, and is a member of the American Herbal Products Association's Cannabis Committee. Why this book may belong in your library and should be read and referenced

As one of fewer than 50 physicians in the US certified in cannabinoid medicine by the Amer Assoc of Cannabinoid Medicine, I recommend this book to physicians, other health care professionals, policy makers, and patients. This book summarizes and communicates the state of the art of cannabis medicine as of roughly early 2013. It is much easier to read and in many ways more practical than such academic books as "Marijuana and Cannabinoid Research: Methods and Protocols" edited by Prof. Emmanuel Onaivi (whose work is advancing knowledge of the CB2 receptor in the CNS) or "Cannabinoids in Nature and Medicine edited by Didier Lambert. Backes' book bridges and updates the clinical knowledge in the aforementioned books as well as less academic and non academic books including multiple chapter authors in "The Pot Book" by Julia Holland or Martin Lee's Smoke Signals, and Irv Rosenfelds's classic, "My Medicine," respectively.

The use of Medical cannabis in the USA goes back to the pre Civil War era, as reprinted in the late Dr Todd Mikuriya's "Medical Marijuana Papers", pre-WW1 medical and pharmacy textbooks, and summarized by Dr David Bearman in "Demons, Discrimination, and Dollars" (and expanded upon his soon to be published illustrated .much expanded version.

As the unscientific, politically motivated stigmas, and legal status of Cannabis-based medicine is rapidly changing, this book and others should be considered essential reading by those who care for those who suffer, those who believe that people ought to not be criminalized for growing a handful of medicinal plants to treat insomnia, neuropathic and other types of chronic pain, reduce opiate use, alcoholic cravings, PTSD, traumatic brain injury/stroke/cardiac ischemia/reperfusion injuries, (search pubmed for research by Prof Yosef Sarne), and enhance feelings of well-being.

FDA's CounterACT program, my patent meets the criteria be developed into a FDA-approved drug without costly and time-consuming human trials!

Info on therapeutic use of cannabinoids and terpenes in this book should be updated every couple of years as practical cannabinoid medicine is advancing rapidly on the west coast USA, in Israel (thanks to the pioneering work in the endocannabinoid system by Prof R. Mechoulam), Spain, Scotland, Uruguay, in Canada, and in England (thanks to GW Pharma), and indeed all over the world where science, a true doctor/patient relationship, and medicinal plant research are permitted.

Extremely helpful guide to using Cannabis medicinally

I purchased this book as I have a family member who has been suffering from Osteoporosis. Traditional pain killers have not been effective and/or are too strong and/or have other unpleasant side affects, so was hoping this book would teach me more about how to effectively use cannabis to help manage pain.

I found the book smart, well-written and informative. I would suggest this book to people with medical problems where traditional methods of managing pain (and other things) have failed, or those who would rather pursue a more natural route.

Fact/Science Based information for those new to Medical Cannabis

Being a 2014 release, this has some of the most up-to-date information about the medicinal applications of cannabis, in spite of the fact that even more information has been released since the final edit of this book.

The book is not cut up into a bunch of chapters, but four loosely defined “Parts”.

In Part 1, you get a conglomeration of cannabis history and biology, but quickly switches up into how cannabinoids work in the body and how they even interact with some prescribed and over-the-counter medications. A good explanation of terpenes and how they augment the affects of the cannabis in the body is here too. Possibly the best book dealing with the “adverse effects” of short-term and long-term use, along with a good few paragraphs about “over-medication” or that bad trip.

Part 2 is interesting in its own right. It is titled, “Using Medical Cannabis”, and goes through all the basics that a newbie would have to figure out on their own. Short of having an experienced user to guide you, this is practically the next best thing. Good few pages on contaminants, pesticides, and other adulterants, particularly useful for underground users depending on an unregulated black market for their medicine.

“Varieties of Medical Cannabis”, Part 3 is a complete section on common strains and what they are used for. If I have a complaint, it is with this section. Many of the strains mentioned are all old standbys. With all the creative crosses and private grows, you find many non-name and designer strains being used in the medical cannabis community. More information about that, crossed with the terpene section, would have been best to allow a nuanced understanding of how that is linked. You are left to extrapolate everything on your own.

Part 4 is where the major component and value of this book comes in, with the “Medical Uses of Cannabis”. This is a fairly comprehensive list of varioius ailments and medical conditions that are treated with medicinal cannabis and the corresponding strains good for those specific conditions. This covers many of the new hot-button studies recently covering anxiety, Alzheimer’s, autism, fibromyalgia, Hep C, MS, Parkinson’s, and PTSD.

If you have a family member that is looking for good science based information on using cannabis medicinally, this is a fantastic primer.

Most of the information is out there on the internet, but you have to put the pieces together. This is all packaged for you in an easy to read, casual format.

If you want in-depth info about the Balinese....

Though this book was originally published over a decade ago, it remains the best source in English for learning about the Balinese through their rituals, daily life, and cosmology. It is not casual reading, but it is also not academic, because Eiseman has such love and interest in the Balinese themselves, not just Bali as a 'paradise for tourists.'

As one reviewer said, "he has produced the most detailed descriptions yet of most aspects of Balinese life and culture. He lives down in Jimbaran on the south coast, so many of his descriptions relate particularly to that area - practices change a bit in different places. He understands the Balinese language, which is not the case with many academics, who visit Bali briefly and write learned treatises, and don't always get it right."

The Sekala and Niskala are ways of saying 'the seen and the unseen," the outward appearances of things and all the symbolic, or mystical, or ritual meanings of all the things he describes. The book is not a tourist guide to places--it's a guide to what makes Bali the fascinating place it is beyond the beaches, massages, and spas. I didn't read it until after I'd come to Bali; but a friend read it before coming and said it really helped him understand some of the things he saw. So either can work--I carry it around on my Kindle and refer to it often.

I would recommend this book to people who find the Bali life around them fascinating and want to know the 'why' of so many aspects of it. From ceremonies to masks to why garbage is placed in a certain part of the house compound, he provides the answers. Because the book is essays you can go to any chapter and not feel like you should have started at the beginning.

Wonderful Book

During a recent visit to Bali, I became fascinated with the practice of Hinduism there and how it influences every aspect of daily life. I recorded my guide's explanations as we went along, but I wanted to learn much more. This book, based on first hand experience, has provided all I was looking for and more. If you are interested in world religions and Balinese culture in particular, I can't say enough good things about this book. Unfortunately, the author passed away in 2013. I would have loved to correspond with him.

STERN'S MANAGEMENT REVIEW FINDS THIS BOOK INSIGHTFUL!

This book reflects the author's belief that problems of theoretical coherence, utilization and effectiveness of HRM practices can best be addressed by an evolutionary perspective, including sociocultural evolution and evolutionary psychology. The title reflects the view that successful HRM practices must emerge in the context of the organization and its environment; there is no one best way. The author's aim is to show that the mechanical perspective in HRM, which presumes that expert-designed interventions will produce intended outcomes, has outlived its usefulness and discusses ways an evolutionary approach can be applied, specifically in hiring and training. The work includes extensive notes and references. This is not a how-to book and not for practitioners who are looking for answers, now!. It's a very well researched work that presents penetrating, mind-expanding insights, incorporates an historical perspective, and offers unconventional ideas.

Out of touch and out of this world

This book starts with the nihilistic premise that much of what is done by applied psycholgists in the workplace doesn't work well and has not been widely adopted. Therefore evolutionary psychology is needed. The problem is that in actuality much does work and has been adopted. Where it has not, there are a host of explanations that are much simpler and more probable than evlutionary nonsense contained herein (e.g., unstructured interviews require no special training but developing a test does).

What is worse is that a lot of the prescriptions (e.g., random selection) are contraindicated by over one hundred years of data based on millions of participants. But for Colarelli this is not a problem, as the author clearly either does not understand the research in personnel psychology or ignores it at his convenience.

The book was reviewed in Personnel Psychology by Mark Wilson with the abstract reading: "The central point of the book is that industrial-organizational psychology (I-O) requires decision makers to act in ways that are not in agreement with how they have evolved to behave and make decisions. The discussion of how humans behaved several thousand years ago will remain nothing more than speculation and has no place in a serious science of behavior until someone invents a time machine. We are constantly told that "traditional methods" are preferred to the I-O approach, especially in the private sector. A reasonable alternative hypothesis as to why decision makers do not want to use data-based decision making is because they fear it will reduce their power to control the organization. Authors have every right to speculate on anything they want when they write a book. This author includes a lot of speculation and not much research to illustrate his points. The premise is bad, he does not deliver on what he says he is going to cover, and the book is hard to read without throwing it across the room several times."

To the extent that the core knowledge in the business sciences has been amassed void of an infusion of biological and evolutionary-based theorizing, Stephen Colarelli deserves credit for attempting a daring endeavor namely to seek ways of Darwinizing his area of expertise.
