You'll lear a lot, but it's old information.
By patrick j schaus
It's easy to read, and you'll learn a lot from reading it. I took a star off because the material is outdated. I would get a newer version, but it was required by my professor. Therefore it doesn't take into account the recent depression and our current recovery from it. My professor is probably right in saying that no current text will accurately depict what has happened and why it has happened yet.

Top notch Textbook
By Alex
Stiglitz is one of those rare economists who has a great research record and writes extremely well. This book is a very good guide to Public Economics, both for the beginner and more advanced student. The amount of material in it is incredible and my class only got through about half of it. The sections on tax policy are especially enlightening.

Reduce the cost of the book
By Stacey Rigley
I rented the book because I needed it for class. The book made information more clear to understand. The only thing that i would say I didn't like was that I couldn't buy the book for future use, due to how much it cost and I had other books to get.

Manson: The Life and Times of Charles Manson, by Jeff Guinn

The New York Times bestselling, authoritative account of the life of Charles Manson, filled with surprising new information and previously unpublished photographs: “A riveting, almost Dickensian narrative…four stars” (People).

More than forty years ago Charles Manson and his mostly female commune killed nine people, among them the pregnant actress Sharon Tate. It was the culmination of a criminal career that author Jeff Guinn traces back to Manson’s childhood. Guinn interviewed Manson’s sister and cousin, neither of whom had ever previously cooperated with an author. Childhood friends, cellmates, and even some members of the Manson family have provided new information about Manson’s life. Guinn has made discoveries about the night of the Tate murders, answering unresolved questions, such as why one person near the scene of the crime was spared.

Manson puts the killer in the context of the turbulent late sixties, an era of race riots and street protests when authority in all its forms was under siege. Guinn shows us how Manson created and refined his message to fit the times, persuading confused young women (and a few men) that he had the solutions to their problems. At the same time he used them to pursue his long-standing musical ambitions. His frustrated ambitions, combined with his bizarre race-war obsession, would have lethal consequences.

Guinn’s book is a “tour de force of a biography…Manson stands as a definitive work: important for students of criminology, human behavior, popular culture, music, psychopathology, and sociopathology…and compulsively readable” (Ann Rule, The New York Times Book Review).

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, August 2013: For more than 40 years, Charles Manson has cast an awful shadow over the Age of Aquarius: an unrepentant murderer synonymous with psychopath in the American lexicon, impossible to ignore or forget. Accordingly, there’s no measuring the volume of ink and celluloid committed to the man, his “family,” and their deeds. So what’s left to be said about Charles Manson? Quite a bit, it turns out. With Manson, Jeff Guinn delves deep into Manson’s “origin story” to reconstruct the wicked combination of events and circumstance that helped make the monster. In prose that’s both economical and compelling--almost hard-boiled--Guinn recounts a troubled upbringing of neglectful, criminal parents and juvenile delinquency, compelling the narrative into the increasingly bizarre landscapes of late-1960s Southern California--a context that turned out to be the perfect accelerant to Manson’s narcissistic delusions. By the time of Helter Skelter and the infamous Manson Family killings, Guinn has aligned the tumblers of Manson’s story and opened a vault of secrets regarding one of the most violent and strange episodes of modern American history. --Jon Foro

From Booklist
The one gesture Guinn makes toward anything like an interpretive biography of permanent-celebrity criminal Charles Manson consists of regular citation of all the other front-page mayhem—riots, assassinations, bombings, Vietnam War atrocities—going on while the ex-con put together “the Family” and eventually directed the nine gruesome murders for which he and a half-dozen minions drew death sentences (all commuted when California’s supreme court abolished the death penalty). Guinn indulges in no psychological or sociological analysis but makes like Sergeant Joe Friday, relaying just the facts, though those include, besides the firmly established ones, many that are just most likely. In Guinn’s hands, the story of a lifelong loser who yet succeeded in gaining what he may have wanted most—fame—because he was also a world-class user of others retains both all its creepy fascination and a full measure of mystery. Well, Guinn asserts at one point, Charlie had charisma, if anyone ever did. Evidently. A fine, plain historical true-crime book. --Ray Olson

Review
“Manson is not simply a biography of a killer and a cultist. It's a history of American culture from the Great Depression to the close of the 20th century. It's the dirty boogie in four-four time, a fascinating study of greed, mind control, celebriphilia, sex, narcotics, racism, and the misuse of power. I lived in South Los Angeles when many of the events in this book took place. No one has told the story as accurately as Jeff Guinn. It's the story of Nixon and Johnson, Martin Luther King, Vietnam, the SDS, the Black Panthers, the acid culture, and a nation coming apart at the seams. From the first page to the last, I could hardly put it down. Hang on, reader. This is a rip-roaring ride you won't forget.” (James Lee Burke)

“[A] brawny, deep-digging biography that's much more riveting than might be expected. . . . Mr. Guinn is fascinating in his use of hindsight, and it allows him a more probing view of his subject than earlier biographers had. . . . Steadily surprising.” (Janet Maslin The New York Times)

“Brilliant. Written with deep insight and in seamless, fluid prose, Guinn’s Manson expands the story of the cult leader into something far beyond the shocking story we're used to. The best book about Manson that I’ve read . . . and I think I’ve read them all.” (Jeffrey Deaver)

"[A] riveting, almost Dickensian narrative. . . . four stars." (Judith Newman People)

“[A] tour-de-force of a biography. . . . Vincent Bugliosi’s book Helter Skelter led me to believe there was nothing more to learn. . . . I was wrong. . . . [Manson] stands as a definitive work: important for students of criminology, human behavior, popular culture, music, psychopathology and sociopathology, and compulsively readable.” (Ann Rule The New York Times Book Review)

"Guinn has managed against all odds to offer a fresh take and a worthy complement to the first-hand immediacy of [Vincent] Bugliosi's Helter Skelter. . . . Offers new insight to those who lived through that turbulent era, and provides essential context to those who didn't. What emerges is a grim but highly compelling portrait of a 'lifelong social predator' who was 'always the wrong man in the right place at the right time.'" (Daniel Stashower The Washington Post)

"[Guinn] is now proving himself to be one of the pre-eminent true crime writers in the country. . . . Even though you know how the story turns out, you’re surprised on almost every page." (Jim Witt Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

“Jeff Guinn takes the reader on a fascinating, chilling visit to a dark and decadent time in American history, all the while maintaining a laser focus on the era’s most recognizable face of evil. A gifted writer and master researcher, Guinn explores the depths of Charles Manson’s twisted psyche in a brilliant effort that dramatically raises the bar on the true crime genre.” (Carlton Stowers, two-time Edgar winner for Best Fact Crime)

"Splendid, comprehensively researched. . . . [Guinn] has given us an American nightmare from which we have not yet fully awoken." (Ariel Gonzalez The Miami Herald)

"Manson is a book impossible to put down, the details so palpable that the sense of being a part of each scene is almost overwhelming. . . . Guinn manages something much more than a true-crime book. Filled with the trampled hopes and broken dreams of those who gave their lives to a sociopath, Manson is an American tragedy." (Michael E. Young Dallas Morning News)

"Sometimes a book is so good that the reviewer does not know where to begin. It doesn't happen often, but this is one of those times. . . . Jeff Guinn has produced not only the best biography of Charles Manson, but the best study of American true crime since Victoria Lincoln's A Private Disgrace: Lizzie Borden by Daylight. . . . [A] consistently superb book. . . . Flawless." (Florence King National Review)

“Manson by Jeff Guinn knocked me down. . . . Mr. Guinn has become a truly great writer of nonfiction Americana.” (Daniel Woodrell The Wall Street Journal)

A Must Read for Manson AND American History
By Mel
This book was excellent! It went way beyond my expectations. This is like a lesson in 1950s-1970s, even some 80s, American history, and how Manson & the Family wove themselves into the culture in the 60s. The main Family members, even many other people who were mere aquaintances w/Manson & knew nothing of his past, have a biography in this book. I've read Helter Skelter many times, & while I have no complaints about it, this book is different from & exceeds the info in that book. This is a recent book, w/things that weren't known back when HS was written. Very well-researched, a must read. It is not like HS, in that it is not so much about the Tate & LaBianca murder trials; instead it is a thorough look into every aspect of Manson- his family & their lives, Manson growing up, going to CA, a bio of the girls involved. I felt like I lived the story... like I followed along.
Even if you aren't too interested in Manson, this book is a crucial look into aspects of America's past: our prison system, dysfunction of families, crime & punishment (& lack thereof), civil rights era, African American & Muslims in America (ways they fought discrimination), drug culture, 60s & 70s politics, San Francisco social history, LA music scene & social history, cults, gangs, Vietnam War, sexual culture of the 60s, psychology & sociology, music (rock) history, history of the Beatles & Beach Boys, & more.
I have a BA in history, & I highly suggest this book for any American history professor for their students to read. I would've gotten much more out of this book for the time periods involved, than many US history books I had to read. Would be helpful also in criminology, sociology, pysch., mental illness, drug history, US politics, & so much more.

Excellent book

A very good and detailed account of Charles Manson. There are on problems with the Kindle version like I've experienced with other books. If you really want to read a comprehensive book about the Charles Manson, his life and his families, both his real and murderous one.

Ok, but not as good as I expected
By Privacy, Please
If you have read "Helter Skelter" (and who hasn't by now?) this book does an okay job of fleshing out the story. The tale of Charlie's early life as a delinquent kid and petty criminal is recounted in detail, including family photos and interviews with family members who lived with him and paint a picture of a scary little creep. While the author is to be commended for tracking down these interviewees, this section of the book drags. Charlie gets out of some institution, does ok for a short while, does something else stupid, goes back in. Ho hum.

The book picks up a bit when it gets into the building of the Family and the background of Manson's contacts with Beach Boy Dennis Wilson and producer Terry Melcher. The author scores with extensive material from LA scenester Gregg Jakobson who was close friends with Wilson and Melcher. However, the trial portion doesn't add much to Bugliosi's past account. I would have also liked more background on some of the family members ( there's a ton of discussion of Ruth Ann Morehouse but nothing on Nancy Pitman) and more details on what happened to each of them after the trial. The book is so thick I was expecting to get all of this as well as more photos. Instead a lot of this book is just rehash.

"...if The Division's doomsday scenario fascinates you as much as it frightens you, then you owe it to yourself to pick up the game's accompanying tie-in novel: New York Collapse."
-Gamecrate

"Check out New York Collapse - a companion guide stuffed with information, backstory and cool physical trinkets."
-Toronto Sun

"It may have been created specifically to accompany the game, but it's probably the most effective survival book about urban disaster that I've read. And I'm a survival nerd, so I've read a lot of them."
-Outside online

"Tom Clancy's The Division: New York Collapse...looks like it was found in a doomsday bunker. It's weathered, torn and waterproofed with wax. Printed inside is an honest-to-goodness survival guide full of tips about snaring rabbits in Central Park and making space heaters out of terra-cotta flower pots. But the survival guide is only one layer of New York Collapse. Scrawled in what looks like a handwritten font through the margins is the firsthand account of April Kelleher, a 30-something Brooklynite trapped in the citywide quarantine."
-Newsweek

"Tom Clancy's The Division: New York Collapse is a history and field guide to the New York experienced in The Division. The novel feels like a game itself - the book is written as a woman's first-hand account of the city after its fall. Readers will need to use included artifacts to piece the story together and figure out more about New York's collapse."
-Gaming Illustrated

"This 'in-world fictionalized companion' book to Ubisoft's acclaimed game Tom Clancy's The Division offers an interactive experience full of removable materials like maps and other artifacts that immerse readers into the saga's mysterious world. Consider this one brand extension done right."

Wow!!! I have to say this guide really leaves an impression!
By M. Zietlow
Where most (if not all) guides give you pictures of game related material printed on their pages this publisher actually takes the time to include them out on custom paper types and insert them into the guide for a tactile virus infected reference. Talk about immersion into a Genre!
With digital downloads going the way of the Dinosaur, Gamer's are left wondering why thy are paying just as much if not more for PC download games... Is it the privilege of downloading??
If you miss having a physical piece of the game your playing to read and review offline, this defiantly will fill the void.

I've never seen a publisher go through such detail in a guide and I really hope they continue along this path for future MMO's and expansions.

Sooo Cool!!! Game companion puzzle book comes with what !?! Reveiw from a non-bibliophile
By Sullen7
So far really cool. Just know that this book works as a companion to the Tom Clancy game The Division. Playing the game gives you more context into what is happening in the book and vice-versa. At its base the book serves as a survival guide for urban catastrophe, so there are tips on how purify water through distillation, what items to put in a "go" bag and other real life survival techniques. I don't really think that reading the book on its own without playing the game would be beneficial other than having a survival guide with a bunch of scribbles in the margins. However, there's the rub. Having a real life urban survival guide then to also have a compelling survival diary of a woman in post-virus New York makes it a really good read. I am afraid to finish the book, cause at this point I want to find April in the game.
When you start to read you find out that the book was a gag gift from a woman's husband. The woman April Kelleher, now is using this gag gift to help her survive what the book describes as a TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it) situation. Along with her day to day diary using the books described survival techniques, you solve embedded puzzles left by the author of the base book. Obviously, you will use this information to further your progress in the video game. If the survival guide and story wasn't enough, the book is made to look and feel weathered and worn. It also comes with seven physical add-ons (ie transit card that serves as a puzzle cipher) to improve immersion into the story and solve puzzles.
Beyond an outside the box approach for game progression, its a nice peripheral the developers made for an owner of their game. If you have the game this is a must buy.

Islam Translated: Literature, Conversion, and the Arabic Cosmopolis of South and Southeast Asia (South Asia Across the Disciplines), by Ro

The spread of Islam eastward into South and Southeast Asia was one of the most significant cultural shifts in world history. As it expanded into these regions, Islam was received by cultures vastly different from those in the Middle East, incorporating them into a diverse global community that stretched from India to the Philippines.

In Islam Translated, Ronit Ricci uses the Book of One Thousand Questions—from its Arabic original to its adaptations into the Javanese, Malay, and Tamil languages between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries—as a means to consider connections that linked Muslims across divides of distance and culture. Examining the circulation of this Islamic text and its varied literary forms, Ricci explores how processes of literary translation and religious conversion were historically interconnected forms of globalization, mutually dependent, and creatively reformulated within societies making the transition to Islam.

Review
“Ronit Ricci has succeeded in writing a book that combines scrupulous examination of textual shifts, concepts, imagery, and genre with a tremendously persuasive argument and a stimulating reading of the differences in translation process between languages and cultures. This book helps us to understand the differing ways in which Arabic and Arabic writings moved into other literatures and takes readers through a rich and detailed journey of imagery and language. This is a fascinating book that will appeal widely to anyone concerned with translation in its historical and cultural contexts.”

(Michael C. Gilsenan, New York University)

“This is a trail-blazing study about the dynamics of writing within the Arabic cosmopolis around the Indian Ocean, a topic that awaits further explorations. Ronit Ricci’s tantalizing close readings of particular versions of the Book of One Thousand Questions show an impressive knowledge and again and again open it up to new views. Islam Translated breathes enthusiasm and pleasure.”

(Hendrik Maier, University of California, Riverside)

“Islam Translated is a remarkable achievement, at once theoretically sophisticated and grounded in tremendously impressive archival research. Grappling with questions fundamental to the humanities, this book promises to serve as a model for future scholarship in area studies and comparative literature.”

(Karen Thronber, Harvard University New Asia Books)

“This volume makes a significant contribution to the study of the intersections of language, faith, and culture.”

(Choice)

“Straddling history and literary theory, this book is a linguistic tour de force, as the author moves effortlessly between Javanese, Malay, Tamil, Arabic, and Hebrew texts. . . . An extraordinary rich and seductive tale of cross-cultural communication and miscommunication.”

(Aseasuk News)

“A salutary corrective both to ideas of indigenous or Southeast Asian ‘uniqueness’ and of derivative Arabization, this splendid book should be widely read.”

(New Zealand Journal of Asian Studies)

“An inspiring combination of breathtaking scholarship and humane vision.”

(Times Higher Education)

“This book succeeds in establishing the importance of literary networks in the spread of Islam. In addition, it provides insights into a range of issues pertaining to a larger literature on questions and answers found across religions traditions, the question of religious authorities, memories of an Islamic past, a lived Islamic present, and shifting cosmopolitanisms—to name a few.” (The Book Review)

“A book of extraordinary scholarship and ambitious scope.” (IDRF Book Exchange)

“Ronit Ricci’s book is an ambitious, erudite, and accessible work aimed at reformulating our understanding of the language, literature, history, and religion of much of maritime Asia. . . . [It] stands as a landmark in the scholarship on Islam in South and Southeast Asia.” (Indonesia)

“Ricci is a gifted reader of texts with a remarkable feel for language, an eye for detail and a superb felicity of expression. . . . Islam Translated communicates to its readers a lively sense of the tremendous creative energy that animated the Islamic textual communities of South and Southeast Asia, and provides a sophisticated framework for understanding the culture-specific practice of translation.” (South Asian History and Culture)

“An excellent new book.” (New Books in Islamic Studies)

“Deftly argued and neatly written. . . . Although we have a few studies concerned with non-Sanskrit languages and literature, they too mostly focus on non-Islamic writing. Studies on Islamic literary materials remain unexplored. Undoubtedly, Ricci’s book fills this void while successfully analyzing an Islamic narrative that blends local and global Islamic cultural and social aspects.” (H-Asia)

“This is a wonderful book and one to take time over. It brings us into the heart of the process of the formation of Islamic pesisir culture. While dense in detail, it is cogently and elegantly argued and Ricci’s linguistic range is astounding.” (Review of Indonesian and Malaysian Affairs)

“Ronit Ricci presents a novel and innovative approach to the momentous transformations occasioned by the Islamisation of this vast region. . . . Ricci’s presentation of her findings is lucid and convincing, and the many translated passages allow the reader glimpses of the style and character of the texts under consideration. Besides looking at Javanese, Malay, and Tamil texts, she also draws on sources in languages as diverse as Arabic, Latin, and Hebrew. . . . Ricci’s excellent and innovative study should be compulsory reading for anyone interested in the spread of Islam beyond Arabia and serve as a starting point in reconsidering the role of vernacular literatures in the processes of Islamisation across Asia.” (Journal of Southeast Asian Studies)

“The questions Ricci raises in her excavations of Javanese, Malay, and Tamil texts will enliven Asian and Islamic literary studies and embolden scholars to pursue global questions on local terms and through local archives for generations to come.” (CSSH Notes)

“A pathbreaking book. . . . Ricci has substantially widened the field of Southeast Asian literary and cultural studies, the comparative study of South and Southeast Asia connections, and our understanding of the processes through which Islam entered the spheres of India, Malaysia, and Indonesia.”
(Comparative Literature Studies)

“Islam Translated is a valuable addition to the study of literary production, Islamization, and translation history, and offers us much to think about and think through. No doubt it will spur additional explorations of the Arabic cosmopolis.”
(Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde)

“Ricci approaches her body of related texts with clear instrumentality, using them as far as possible to answer the deeper questions that drive her inquiry, questions related to the cultural workings of the Arabic Cosmopolis. . . . These highly textured discussions and reflexions present a range of questions, arguments, conclusions and musings that invite productive response and debate.” (Asian Studies Review)

“Fascinating and innovative. . . . As a study of religion and literature this book yields terrific new insights and demands new approaches to the perennial questions of great/little or cosmopolitan/vernacular cultural dynamics. . . . It is a fantastic, conversation-starting work that sets a new standard for what we can aspire to in Asian studies.” (Journal of Asian Studies)

“This analysis of the Tamil, Javanese, and Malay versions of the Book of One Thousand Questions is a very welcome addition to the already rich literature on translation in Asia.” (The Translator)

“Ricci not only offers rich insight for translation studies scholars who are interested in the interface between translation and religion, but also brings home to scholars studying religions that investigation of translation conceptions and practices of faith communities can fruitfully extend our understanding of how religious traditions and identities are articulated.” (Translation Studies)

“A significant piece of scholarship on the role of language and literary networks in the spread of Islam and the interplay between the vernacular and cosmopolitan.”
(Asian Ethnology)
