can't get enough of this series...

I was beginning to have withdrawal symptoms, needed my next fix.....

This was a truly heart felt emotional installment, the 'kids' are really growing up, even more tan I think their parents did. I know its different now, but when the Parents were a similar age they were quite reckless.

This installment definitely had all the couples actually thinking about their futures.
Slade and Trinity are closer than ever, so happy for them, but Trinity needs a serious shaking with regards to her father, she is taking this too far.

Poor Roland, I so like him, he has so much to understand, his feelings, heath's feelings even his families feelings, and he had more than enough opportunities to 'come out' I seriously think the 'family' might not understand it, but they will support him.

Ward and Clementine seem to have hit a point in their relationship, which needs addressing and I so loved Ward's sister Willow, so frank, fearless, so British!! The Club situation was definitely a turning point in their relationship.

Asher is trying so hard to win Silke back, and I thought she was a bit hard on him. Once he winds her back, he does need to make his authority come though, he seems to be a little bit of a wet blanket sometimes and I hope that changes. I suppose he is punishing himself for his past and he needs to let it go.

Conrad. has my total backing, he really is turning into a smashing young man, and so on his side where Beatrice is concerned. She screwed up and as heart breaking as it was and will continue to be for Conrad, I do believe he made the right choice, in both his personal and professional life.

Thomas and Rome, that's really sweet to see. I hope they get through the hard times unscathed, and I just love Theo, he may have been a rotter to Thomas when younger but he is really trying to right his wrongs.

Heath is not my favorite person right now, he is quite insensitive to Ro's feelings, but I'm glad they sorted things out. They are good together. Roland is going to need Heath when the time comes to tell his family.

Mike, OH MY WORD, I was in shock, yes he was in the wrong, yes Trinity was being far too hard on him, but he did not deserve to be hurt. Glad he came through it. SO loved Papa/Gramps Preston, I was shaking in my boots! He got the message across and Mike and Trinity finally buried the hatchet. That was a real life changing moment !

But the whole group was right where they needed to be, by Mike's side.

Loving how Reid was magnanimous when Mike was sick, and enjoying seeing how his relationship with Janice is going, they both deserve some happiness.

Silke needs commending, ending her relationship with Pike, he is a lovely man, and i truly hope he finds his happy ever after.

Silke and Asher makes interesting if not confusing reading, hope they make it through the hell they find themselves in.

The wedding plans of Trinity and Slade are going to be fun reading.

Cant wait.

Another good read......

Oh my gosh.....I really loved this one!!!!!! I loved having more of Arsen & Silke and Roland & Heath. I think we need to see more Skye & Cayson.....really hated to see them on back burner lately. It was a long fight to get them back together for them to only be mentioned occasionally.

In love with this series..

Beatrice does not deserve Conrad’s forgiveness so easily. He was right when he said that she makes every little thing about her and doesn’t see why he does what he does for her. I’m going to reaffirm that I’m Team Conrad because whilst he shouldn’t have hid it from her, he didn’t do it with the intention of hurting her. He did it so that she wouldn’t have to deal with him and he could protect her. I do get why Beatrice is angry but she isn’t able to see reason which is why this really annoyed me when she just blamed him for everything, how is that fair? I can’t see why she thinks it is fair hence why I’m team Conrad.

Roland; I get why he’s not telling anyone about the change in his life but at the same time I hope he doesn’t feel like his friends wouldn’t understand. I get the feeling that absolutely nothing will change between any of them but if something did change then I’d be really disappointed. I won’t tell you if anything does change or if anyone finds out because you should read it and find out!

Trinity is angry at Mike; I’m so not surprised at all. I mean he did cross one too many lines but I don’t want Trinity to hate him forever. Banning him from her wedding and planning a cheap one just to spite him is kind of mean but again I do understand why. At the end of the day Trinity loves her father and that is why this betrayal hurts that much more. I do have hope that they can move past this.

Clementine and Ward, I am slowly falling more in love with these two but honestly I get whiplash from how much things are going back and forth. It’s kind of exhausting to read but I have hopes that these two sort it out.

Theo and Thomas, I think that these two will find a way to sort it out between them, I honestly have hope that they’ll get through it and be better off on the other side.

Silkie, she’s naturally hurt by Arsen reappearing in her life but I honestly hope that she gives him a chance. If she does then I’m sure he can win back her love and trust again. I know he hurt her so badly but he was in prison and prison does funny things to people’s mind. I am sure he did what he thought was best and he is trying to get himself back on an even keel. He has done well so far and I have faith that he will stay on this path. He’s done so well and I’m so proud to see the growth in him. Silkie will see that one day I’m sure or at least I’m hoping she will.

About the Author

Geoff Reiss is Senior Architect with Program Management Group plc. He has extensive experience in the construction industry and has grown into the project management specialism over a varied career.

Paul Rayner After an early career with IBM in Australia Paul Rayner began a lifelong interest in the best ways of managing large scale corporate projects. He was a Commercial Projects Manager for Cybernet Timesharing in the 70’s, and principle of Great Northern Computer Services. After gaining his MBA he joined Logica plc as a Management Consultant, where he worked until his retirement in 2011. He chaired the Association for Project Management’s Programme Management Group, wrote the APM Introduction to Programme Management, and co-authored the Gower Handbook of Programme Management (2006).

He worked extraordinarily hard to improve approaches to portfolio and programme management, cheerfully giving his time to speak at events throughout the world. He was also a committed family man who took great pride in supporting the achievements of his three children. When he knew he was dying of cancer, he was determined to finish Portfolio and Programme Management Demystified, which he wanted to dedicate to them. He died, aged 64, in August 2011.

Donnie MacNicol Utilising his extensive PM experience across multiple industries Donnie leads consultancy, training, facilitation and mentoring assignments for global companies and government departments in developing project and programme leadership. Donnie chaired the Association for Project Management People Specific Interest Group for 10 years to 2011, is a Visiting Fellow at Kingston Business School, an individual member of the Acumen7 professional network and Partner at Synatus.

One of two recommended books on Program Management

Would Buy Again. One of two recommended books on Program Management, the other is Program Management (Fundamentals of Project Management) Michel Thiry. I really find it annoying that you have to keep typing until you have twenty five words in these reviews. I would be inclined to fill out mofe if they would take off this requirement.

Buy and READ

The third edition of Cultures and Organizations manages to significantly improve a great book. As a professor I have become deeply cynical of new editions -- I see shameless textbook producers make trivial changes every 18 months to kill off competition from used books. Fortunately this is not a text and the changes are real improvements from the previous edition.

If you are interested in globalization or comparative cultures you will want to buy and read this book even if you have already devoured the second edition. The most obvious changes: the expanded chapter (2) on studying cultural differences, the new proposed cultural dimension of indulgence (8), and the new chapter on evolution of cultures (12) are more than worth the time and effort of acquiring the new book.

This new edition resolves a dilemma for me: I was always torn between recommending Cultures and Consequences or Cultures and Organizations as an intro to Hofstede's ideas for someone who wanted a deep understanding of the research. I would now recommend that everyone, academic, business person, or curious reader, start with the third edition of Cultures and Organizations.

I first read/studied this book when I did my MBA in Graduate school. Since then, I have read and re-read it and each time, it has uncovered and unleashed more wisdom upon me on this topic. Not only does the book teach me how to isolate and be conscious of cultural sensitivities, it, more importantly reveals how unconscious, most people (we interact with) are on this topic. Cultural dimensions are examined and topics such as the "Power Distance", "Authority", "Time" "Non-Verbal communication", "Uncertainty avoidance", "Collectivism versus individualism", and "Femininity versus masculinity" are studied and explained in deeper depth.

I find that reading this book together with another book titled "International Business Communication" by Dr. David A. Victor would greatly enhance your understanding of the theories and concepts expounded by Dr. Hofstede. Dr. Victor invented a model (LESCANT) that simplifies the understanding of "Software of the Mind". "LESCANT is an acronym that represents seven areas in which cultural issues arise when dealing with international business communication. The acronym stands for Language, Environment, Social Organization, Context, Authority, Non-Verbal, and Time. Dr. David A. Victor, who is a professor of management and the Director of International Business Programs at Eastern Michigan University, created the model." [....]

Multiple views of this world

In these times of globalization, understanding and accepting cultural diversity and appreciating other people's views about life and how human beings should relate to one another is increasingly important. In the late sixties, Dr. Geert Hofstede became interested in the cultural diferences between countries and has researched this subject since then. This book presents his work for the non-academic reader. It is not an easy book, but the educated reader will be able to fully understand the ideas; reading an article about factor analysis in an encyclopeadia may help to grasp how the data was interpreted. The book itself does not use any mathematical approach. Dr. Hofstede has developed a model that tries to explain the cultural diferences between countries and organizations; this model has been refined and improved over decades. Based on statistical analysis of a large body of data, he suggests that culture may be understood according to a number of principal components, such as "power distance", "individualism x collectivism", "masculinity x femininity", etc; each concept is carefully defined and the measurement method is explained. A discussion of what to expect from the relative strength of each dimension is presented; in other words, the factors are, to some extent, predictors of the dominant values and behaviors, both individual and institutional, of a society. I was truly amazed by the accuracy of these predictions, at least for the few countries I have lived and worked in and recommend this book to anyone who deals often with people from other countries and cultures.

A fascinating account; shines as both history and human-interest story

Steve Silberman is a journalist and writer for WIRED magazine who has written many readable stories on medicine and human health. In this book he brings many years of reporting and training to delve upon one of the most prominent health issues of our time – autism.

Silberman’s book is rich in both human and scientific detail and shines in three aspects. Firstly, he meticulously traces the history of autism and the lives of the neurologists, psychologists and doctors who chased its elusive identity. He focuses especially on two psychologists, Leo Kanner in the United States and Hans Asperger in Nazi-controlled Vienna who identified the syndrome and pioneered its study through observations on hundreds of cases. Asperger was the first one to identify a variety of signs and symptoms that contribute to what we now call autism spectrum disorder, and his studies were expansive and nuanced. Silberman’s account of both the foibles and the triumphs of these two individuals is fascinating: while Kanner’s fault was in assigning the blame for autism to parents (he coined the phrase "refrigerator mother") and focusing on children, Asperger identified mostly high-functioning autistic savants in his publications for a chilling reason – so that the lower functioning cases could avoid the ghastly fate met by victims of the Nazis’ euthanasia program which aimed at eliminating “mentally feeble” individuals. Both Kenner and Asperger meant well, and in Asperger’s case his withholding of the identities of autistic people literally meant the difference between life and death.

And yet as Silberman so adeptly demonstrates, this was one of those cases where the intentions of humane and well-meaning researchers actually caused harm to public perceptions of the syndrome. Kanner and Asperger’s story is an instructive lesson in both the vagaries of scientific discovery and human nature and the sometimes unfortunate intersection of science with politics. The selective reporting of high-functioning patients in case of Asperger and children in case of Kanner led to a massive underreporting of autistic cases and the creation of a guilt complex among parents. It also led to a delay in the recognition of autism as a spectrum of disorders (Autism Spectrum Disorders) rather than a narrowly defined condition. It wasn't until 1981 that English researcher Lorna Wing finally publicized Asperger's wide ranging observations; and it wasn't until 1991 before German researcher Uta Frith finally translated his work.

Encouraged by Wing's work, when the diagnostic manual DSM-III-R finally classified autism as a widespread and bonafide syndrome with a textured and wide-ranging spread of symptoms and issues, Kanner and Asperger’s inadvertent underreporting of cases led everyone to believe that there was a sudden ‘epidemic’ of autism, a belief that triggered even more soul-searching and the assignment of cause and effect to all kinds of environmental variables including vaccines. Much of the media with its emphasis on sensationalism and simplistic explanations at the expense of subtlety and complexity did not help matters, although ironically as Silberman tells us, it was a movie - "Rainman" - that brought a lot of public attention to autism. It is in the second half of the book that Silberman sternly clamps down on fraudulent claims of connections between autism and vaccination, including the retracted work published by Andrew Wakefield.

Finally, Silberman’s detailed account draws up wonderful and sometimes very moving portraits of families and individuals affected by autism. Also included are capsule portraits of famous people with autism and Asperger's syndrome like Nikola Tesla and Temple Grandin. Silberman makes it clear that such people defy easy classification, and we do them and ourselves a disservice when we stereotype and bin them into discrete categories. He interviews hundreds of people who are stricken by the syndrome and tells us the stories of both adults and children who first struggled to cope with the disease and then found solace in meeting similar people and connecting with support networks. He also profiles families from a remarkably wide cross-section of society – from people living below the poverty line to wealthy California families - who are convinced by unverified connections between the environment and autism. Silberman does not agree with them, but he empathizes with their concerns and tries to understand them. Fortunately the stigma associated with autism spectrum disorders is gradually giving way to a more subtle understanding, but as Silberman indicates there is still a long way to go. As the title puts it, his plea is for a world that appreciates neurodiversity; the fact that even people regarded as psychologically different can have very important and valuable perspectives to offer.

If I had some minor gripes with the book, they were with the sometimes long-winded digressions on the lives of autism researchers and patients and the relative lack of discussion of cutting-edge biomedical and neurological research on the topic, including work from genomics and drug discovery. But these are minor gripes. Silberman has painted a rich, empathetic portrait of a devastating, baffling but ultimately comprehensible disorder and its history which we all owe ourselves to appreciate. Because ultimately, as the central message of this book reveals, the cure for autism is in understanding and empathy. The cure lies in human nature itself.

My Tribe

I per-ordered this book a few months ago and last week also ordered the Kindle version. My kindle version was delivered promptly this morning and I've been reading it since. I have a paperback version that is on it's way to be delivered today so I can share a copy with my husband and my doctor. Thus far this book promises to be what I had hoped it would be, another opportunity to understand myself better, and an opportunity to help others understand those of us on the Spectrum. I was diagnosed with Asperger's last year at the age of 53. Finally, after all of these years, I continue to understand that I am not broken, or in need of repair, just simply different. Thank you Mr. Silberman for your dedication to this topic and for writing what promises to be a very helpful book for the Neurodiverse and Neurotypical world.

Re-writing the history of autism

The narrative history of autism has been dominated by many professionals and academicians with strong biases and self-interests, often fiscally driven and promotional for particular "treatments", or by well-meaning parents whose experience is only with their child or particular treatments (important, but not wide-reaching). Finally, Neurotribes gives us a meticulously researched objective account that not only shatters many myths about "legends" in the field of autism (many of who have caused more damage than good), but one crafted with compassion and with the insights of people on the spectrum and their family members. Having been in the trenches for more than 40 years, I not only recognized but I knew or know many of the important figures profiled in this book, and Neurotribes is spot on in capturing their passion and significance. This book will re-write the history of autism, and only in the most positive ways.

About the Author
Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, MD, (1926–2004) was a Swiss-born psychiatrist, humanitarian, and co-founder of the hospice movement around the world. She was also the author of the groundbreaking book On Death and Dying, which first discussed The Five Stages of Grief. Elisabeth authored twenty-four books in thirty-six languages and brought comfort to millions of people coping with their own deaths or the death of a loved one. Her greatest professional legacy includes teaching the practice of humane care for the dying and the importance of sharing unconditional love. Her work continues by the efforts of hundreds of organizations around the world, including The Elisabeth Kübler-Ross Foundation: EKRFoundation.org.

David Kessler is the coauthor of Life Lessons: Two Experts on Death and Dying Teach Us About the Mysteries of Life and Living. Excellent resource, highly recommended

By far, the best book I have read on grief and the grieving process. Some other critics have said, there are a few (may two or three) new age-y sentences in the book that I did not appreciate. I understand that Dr. Kubler-Ross wrote more on those topics in other books. The rest of the book (99%) felt very on point and gave good discussion. I especially liked that the book went beyond the five stages and talked about other emotions and situations a person may experience (sudden deaths, getting "closure", Etc.). I also liked that there were numerous examples of people's stories, and also that the authors shared their own experiences with grief. Highly recommend to those who want to know more about this topic.

It may be your time to "wallow" in the grief and this book will give you that permission.

This weekend I was finally forced to accept the fact that I was suffering and I could no longer hold the pain at bay. My husband of almost 34 years died in May and at the time I thought I was doing OK. I took a few weeks off to deal with the pain and then went back to work, thinking it would be the best thing to keep me from "wallowing" in my grief.
The problem is, "wallowing" is what I probably needed to do and I never gave myself that permission. I have always prided myself on my ability to cope and take care of the difficult parts of life. To be the tough one in any tough situation.
As time passed, my ability to cope slipped away. I found myself unable to handle anything except the most pressing needs such as feeding the pets or horses. I did not leave my home except when forced. I did not sleep. I realized my business was beginning to suffer because I could not fulfill my obligations and I did not know where to turn or what to say because I had convinced everyone else I was doing fine. I did not know what to do.
Then this weekend after lots of crying and praying when I could not sleep, I believe God led me to find this book because through the fog something said try grief.com. Don't laugh, because God can use anything to speak to you. In the Bible he even used a donkey once. There on the Internet I found this book. (I am into social media marketing so this made perfect sense to me). Thankfully I could instantly download it to my iPad and I spent the rest of the weekend reading it. Some parts I have read more that once so it would sink into my thick head.
If you are struggling with the pain of your own loss, or you know someone who is going through it, you really should get this book. Even if they appear to be fine there is a good chance they are not. I know I will purchase a few hardcopies to have to give to people who need them.

A wonderful resource for those dealing with loss

This book has gotten some grief due to the public misunderstanding of the "five stages of grief". The author originally developed these stages to be what terminally ill patients may go through after their diagnosis becomes certain, NOT to deal with the grieving of those left behind after death. She did however adapt the idea of the five stages in this excellent book on grieving the loss of loved ones.

My father died very suddenly in September, and I spent much of October and November all but inhaling every book on grief and grieving I could find. This was one of the best. Dr. Kubler-Ross is clear, concise in her language, full of empathy and understanding, and outlines the many ways in which grief is hard at first, then harder still later on. Her words were a great comfort to me and I recommend this book highly to those who are grieving.

They show me the researched and scientifically verified "best practices" common to effective TAPs, then offer to coach me (and you) in those "best practices" I was very interested to learn the leadership style of those who have "successfully" led a plateaued or dying church into Christ-centered, mission focused, outreach oriented beacons of light in their communities, then learn that I can be coached to lead in a similar way.

Besides learning about myself, I have been blessed to help pastors in our Conference discover their God-given uniqueness for nearly a year. Soon we will participate in the signature "TAP Boot Camp" training (recommended in this book) learning how to apply these principles in our own individual ways. True to the process these authors present, our pastors and "their" layperson leaders who are committed to applying these identified "best practices" will take their own unique plan back home to implement in their local plateaued and/or dying churches.

None of this could be accomplished in such a unique way without the work of these authors as explained in their book. I believe with all my heart that these Biblically-sound authors have arrived on scene, now, to be used by God before so many of our American churches completely fade away and die in the next few years.

I highly recommend you, pastor or layperson, desperately seeking to bring life to your congregation, read and apply this important guide before it's too late for your congregation.
