Roodt situates the extreme social violence that has characterised South Africa since 1994 also within the ambit of its identity crisis. A society in which fathers are absent, where people speak no defined language but various forms of broken English, will produce the very high murder rates that South Africa has.

Afrikaners, who have their own centuries-old identity forged within the country, are suffering from the revolutionary new ersatz "English" identity being imposed on everyone. Afrikaans institutions have been appropratiated by mostly white and radical English-speakers regard Afrikaners as foreigners or interlopers in their own country.

An excellent (but damning) depiction of the situation in South Africa, showing the reader the inevitable extermination of other cultures by anglification. I think it would even be better when it is released in Afrikaans by Dr. Roodt later.

This short essay focus on the identity (or actually lack of it..) of the broader community from which the white radicals at the core of the ANC 'liberation movement', have drawn their strength and support, and still do.
Now that the once prosperous South Africa is burning with crime, corruption and decay, and undeniably so, these same radicals are doing their utmost to fan the flames!
What is their endgame?
As I've said, this is only a short essay. Volumes can be written on this subject. The author barely skims the surface, but leaves us with enough food for thought.
This subject needs to be pushed into the daylight properly.

Yahweh Revealed?

Divine Encounters is essentially a rehashing of Sitchin's earlier works, but this time with a renewed focus on whether encounters with ancient gods were divine or extraterrestrial in nature. The last chapter is the most interesting, because it is here that Sitchin finally addresses the question of whether or not Yahweh is one of the Anunnaki. This is a point Sitchin has previously been silent on, despite being able to associate almost every other ancient god with the Anunnaki. Surprisingly, Sitchin concludes that Yahweh is not just one of the Anunnaki, but in fact is the god of the Anunnaki. Is Sitchin being politically correct here so as not to upset the establish religious orthodoxy of present day Judaism? After all, it is one thing for Sitchin to suggest that Judaism has its roots in the pagan (let alone extraterrestrial) beliefs and practices of ancient Mesopotamia, it is quite another to suggest that Yahweh is just an extraterrestrial from another planet! Clearly, Sitchin seems to be playing it safe by concluding that Yahweh is not only the one true god of Judaism, but also the Anunnaki, and quite possibly of other worlds in the universe. However, if one looks closely at Sitchin's own writings, the evidence to decipher the identity of Yahweh can be found - it is none other than the Anunnaki god Enki. The reasoning is too long and complex to go into here, and I will leave it to the interested reader to do their own research, and reach their own conclusions. Regardless of whether you agree with Sitchin's theories or not, his theories are compelling, and he is without doubt one of the most fascinating writers of our time.

Is doesn't matter at all whether it`s science, it still may be true...

All books by Mr. Sictchin are very good and unusual, IMHO. But this one in a way surpases them by far. I shall not go into a detailed description of the contents but the last chapters of the book have striken me with their unorthodox approach and analysis. I shall give just one example - the meaning of the Hebrew word 'olam' (world, universe): this word appears a lot in the Bible, both by itself and in two strange combinations 'le-olam' ('for ever'!? what's the connection?) and 'me-olam' ('never') - this ethymology always looked queer to me - and here comes Mr. Sitchin and makes this 'space-time' connection simple and clear.

And at the end Mr. Sicthin tries to find out who really was the God of the Bible - and arrives to a conclusion you would never expect!

Not on a par with Sitchin's earlier works

Generally an interesting book although not as illuminating as Sitchin's previous works. The entire book is tainted somewhat by Sitchin's conclusions as to the identity of Yahweh. Sitchin clearly allows his own religious beliefs to influence his conclusion in that regard. There is a complete lack of historical evidence to support Sitchin on this issue and despite his statement (p. 374) that his conclusion is "quite logical on reflection", it is in fact totally lacking in logic. Those who are truly interested in a thoughtful analysis of Yahweh's identity should direct themselves to Alan Alford's "Gods of the New Millenium".

A must have for bodyweight workouts! Each sheet has what exercise you do and the reps, it's that simple. Each page has a "daily tip of advice" that includes such topics as "On Rest Between Sets", "On Nutrition", and "On Shin Training" just as a few examples. The journal has the list of workout plans (New Blood, Veterano, Lockdown) that are taken from Convict Conditioning I. Also the book gives you an abbreviated progression chart for each of the Big Six Exercises. For a serious student of bodyweight exercises, this journal will only help you track your progress and give sound advice.

Robin G. Jordan is a certified nurse-midwife and formerly a long time faculty member of Frontier Nursing University, teaching midwives and nurse practitioners. She is currently Professor in Nursing at North Central Michigan College, Michigan, USA.  

Janet L. Engstrom is a certified nurse-midwife and women's health nurse practitioner, teaching midwives and nurse practitioners. She is the Associate Dean for Research at Frontier Nursing University, Kentucky, USA.

Julie A. Marfell is a family nurse practitioner and nurse practitioner educator. She is the Associate Dean for Family Nursing at Frontier Nursing University, Kentucky, USA.

Cindy L. Farley is a certified nurse-midwife and midwifery educator. She is currently Adjunct Associate Professor at Georgetown University, Washington D.C., USA, and Adjunct Professor at the Midwifery Institute of Philadelphia University, Pennsylvania, USA.

Good book esp. for providers new to OB & seeking a more holistic approach

As a Board Certified FNP provider at a free pregnancy clinic providing care to uninsured and underserved women, as well as a Board Certified Advanced Holistic Nurse, I'm always interested in perspectives and approaches that offer a more woman-centered, holistic style of care. This book appealed to me because of the proclaimed woman-centered approach.

I recently received this book, as well as Supporting a Physiologic Approach to Pregnancy and Birth: A Practical Guide by Avery and both books are good. Both discuss the importance, with supporting evidence, of returning to a more natural, "normalizing" approach to birth vs. "management" of the pregnancy and birth process. However, this text goes into much more detail regarding basic concepts and care in OB, and thus would be the better choice for someone new to the field or who is looking for a more comprehensive review. I must say though that both this book and the Avery book present only basic holistic concepts that are most appropriate for providers with minimal to no experience with holistic and integrative care. But as we know, the majority of birthing providers in the USA practice with the mainstream medical model (lay and nurse midwives excepted), so that makes both texts appropriate for the majority of providers.

The Avery book I mention above is a great choice for experience OB providers who don't need the general OB review as it focuses primarily on the rationale, woman-focused methods to incorporate and how to integrate them to create a more holistic, woman centered practice. For example, this book discusses how to address common conditions in pregnancy such as a UTI, Constipation, URI, Depression, etc. with the current standard of care in addition to any practices that can also make the care more holistic. The Avery text assumes this level of knowledge is already in place and thus only discusses the holistic interventions that could be added to make the practice more holistic (as well as mainstream medical practices & interventions that could be decreased to support a more holistic focus of care).

I don't want to give the impression that this book has no benefit for experienced providers, because it does. I have both and I like both books. This one includes post-natal information that the other does not, it has relevant case studies in each section, and overall has a great review of OB care in general. It also addresses the Healthy People goals and how integrating a more holistic approach can help an OB practice better align with or meet those goals. This book would also be great for teaching, as an in-clinic reference book for providers, and again is perfect for students and new grads. (and for those who just prefer a more comprehensive text in general).

If you're OB experienced and want something more succinct, go for the other book. If you prefer a more comprehensive reference pick this one.

The text is divided into the five sections, each offering comprehensive information on current standard practices as well as integrating a more holistic, woman-centered approach. There are many illustrations, charts, case studies and extensive supporting references at the end of each chapter, as well as resources for further information. The book is set up like a basic text-book used in school

Part 1: Physiological foundations of prenatal and postnatal care (strong physiologic review)

Part 2: Preconception and prenatal care (current standards of care and suggested modifications)

Part 3: Common complications of pregnancy (Dz process and physiology review with standard treatments and suggested modifications)

The Most Comprehensive Book on Women's Health!

"A Woman-Centered Approach is a comprehensive resource for the care of the pregnant woman before and after birth." This book has it ALL. I am currently certifying to become a doula. This books answers all of my questions. Is this book a textbook? It doesnt come across as one but this book is chock full of information on women's health that is easy to read, helpful and holistic. With case studies and diagrams definitions and tips, 'Prenatal & Postnatal Care is THE book to have if you are a woman or working with women: nurses, aides, doulas, midwives, health educators and so much more. Prenatal & Postnatal Care is a STEP UP from "Our Bodies Ourselves" I love this book and I highly recommend it!

Very comprehensive, looks like it covers everything!

This in-depth book seems to cover about everything about the subject. Anybody thinking about having babies, working on it, or newly gratified by this experience should really indulge this like your favorite dessert. I can imagine a new mother sitting in her hospital bed reading this with mind-expanding pleasure, and seriousness. Hubbie should be reading, or at least browsing thru, this or another copy! Admittedly, my background in the subject is not great, but I felt almost like an expert on the whole matter after reading it slowly. Not to mention my general knowledge of the human family may have actually skyrocketed by the time I finished. Easy 5 stars!

Kirby Crow claims to write homoerotic romance. At least that's what her last four books purport to be. Angels of the Deep is not one of these. While it does contain homoerotic romance, this book is, in no uncertain terms, a horror novel.

Becket Merriday is chief of police of a small town in the state of New York. He gave up a career as a top-rate FBI profiler and moved to Irenic in an effort to save his marriage. It didn't work. Now, he's headed for divorce, is infatuated with his male lieutenant Sean Logan and has a serial killer on the loose. Someone or something is killing young men, slicing their heads off and cutting out their hearts, and it's up to he and Sean to solve the case.

But that's just the framework of this dark, dark story. Kirby Crow has penned a brutal study of what God, angels and the nephilim (angel/human offspring) might be like if they were anything akin to the alien warriors history hints at rather than the watered-down, kindly God and angels we think of today.

Some have called this a love story. And while I've mentioned there is such a component, I call Angels of the Deep an apocalyptic, terrifying look at why we humans can't and don't want to peer across the Veil. God and the angels he created are not like us. We might be made in his image, but we are fundamentally different. Crow shows us this in many uncomfortable ways: from how the angels and nephilim might love to how they might treat humans.

A read you'll not soon forget, Angels of the Deep is well-crafted and impeccably written. My one complaint is that it's just too damn intense. I felt bludgeoned by the time I finished. I also have to warn readers that the book contains a lot of eroticism, multiple and graphic rape and sex scenes, and a few references to past instances of pedophilia. This is not a book for the weak of heart.

I recommend it!

Masterful, brutal, and compelling

The term 'rollercoaster ride' is so frequently over-used in reference to emotional events that it has become something of a cliché, trotted out like a knackered old nag every time an author pens a turbulent book.

In the case of 'Angels of the Deep', however, there simply is no better term than 'rollercoaster ride'. The initial pages of the book, dealing with the terror of a small boy at the hands of a twisted priest ratchet the car higher and higher up the first incline. Approaching the hundredth page, as Chief Becket Merriday's already-complicated life is further convoluted by one brutal discovery after another, the car is poised at the very zenith of the ride; nothing ahead but limitless frightening space. It's when the reader hits page 127 (don't you DARE skip ahead!) that the car hurtles down into the first deep ravine, your stomach is exploring crevices in your body that you never knew existed, and Ms Crow -hithertofore manning the brakes- has just leapt out of the car. You're on your own, for the gut-wrenching ride of your life.

Forget the damp nose of the dog, nudging you for his evening walk. Forget your best beloved imploring you to go to bed. Forget that you have to get up early for work tomorrow. There is no place to stop, no pull-over on the road once you're past that page, no map-reading and nip-behind-the-bushes-for-a-loo-break moment.

Every person you will meet along this wild ride, no matter how minor their role, is a loving study in characterisation. Every place, too, is a character, with Ms Crow's lush descriptive prose pouring subtle visuals into your retinas until you can taste the darkness that envelops this entire book.

You will learn more sand-pitted ancient history than you ever thought you needed to know, and Ms Crow ties it all neatly with a bloody, vengeful bow. Shot through with anger, blood, vengeance and desire, this story delivers everything you could want, reverberating with subtle and clever semiotics, and the shocking revelation that you are reading the most unexpected and intense study in love.

Revelations. Ah. This is the rub: I can't deliver a detailed review of this book without diving into spoilers. But revelations you will have aplenty, and when they come they are shocking, intense, and delicious. This is a beautifully-crafted book that demands a second reading, just to see if it really happened.

Like leaving the cinema after an immersive movie, 'Angels of the Deep' finally disgorges its reader onto the streets of reality, as bewildered and blinking as a newborn. 'Mangled' was the first word that came to mind (still is the most apt word) when I tried to describe how I felt once finished. This story is exhausting for the reader, yet rewarding. It's almost as good as revenge, but this book is a dish best served bloody and still-warm.

This deserves to be a hardcover. Quite why Ms Crow is writing for small presses is beyond me. 'Angels of the Deep' has the chops to butt heads with Stephen King and, while it may not win against such a master of his genre, it would acquit itself damn well.

While heading into work the day after reading this book, I noticed the moon was a rare bloody orange, as if she knew what words I'd been devouring the night before. The random lipsalve I'd grabbed from the drawer and stuffed in my bag that morning had been one scented with apples (read the book; you'll know why that gave me such a start when I uncapped and used it). This is a book that makes you question reality just a little and look over your shoulder, just to make sure.

The silver screen would adore 'Angels of the Deep'. Somebody needs to tell Ridley Scott that his next opus awaits between these covers.

Good first half, terrible second half

Ms. Crow clearly knows how to write. (Warning: spoilers follow.) The first 150 or so pages of the book are very good, introducing us to Beck, his estranged wife Catherine, and his buddy Sean with a deft touch that makes them all believable, interesting, and well-rounded. The plot--a whodunit involving a murderous angel--moves forward nicely, bolstered by good pacing and some truly exceptional dialogue.

Then Beck comes face-to-face with the angel/villain Mastema, and the entire story devolves into pseudo-kabbalistic mumbo-jumbo and one rape scene after another. The fate of Catherine, in particular, is disgusting and unnecessary; could Ms. Crow not have found another way of freeing Beck up to pursue his interest in Sean? The real kicker is that for the plot's central conceit to work, the reader has to believe in and empathize with the relationship between Beck and Mastema--something Ms. Crow then renders impossible by 1) making Mastema thoroughly loathsome, and 2) demonstrating that Beck (in both past and present incarnations) has no idea why he bothers to spend time with the angel. So they have a relationship spanning 6,000 years that's based on absolutely nothing. Great. And the fight at the end of the book is just a mess, alternating between poorly described physical action and poorly thought-out mystical elements.

I'm giving the book two stars because it starts out so well; otherwise I would have given it one. Which is a shame, considering the talent that's on display here. I hope Ms. Crow's writing improves with time and practice.

What it says on the tin

This is a fun little book. It's pretty standard Mad Libs, but Steven Universe themed. Perfect for younger fans or for older fans who want to get a kick out of making Pearl swear.

Mad Libs silliness as usual, but occasionally contradicts source material in weird ways.

I wasn't planning to review the tie-in activity books for this series unless they had actual content, but I figure what the hey; I've perused it and it's a book, so I might as well. First, I was a huge Mad Libs fan when I was a kid, though like many people I probably used a few too many potty words to make it funny. Even then, the stories usually weren't that funny, but occasionally an exceptionally absurd sentence would hit your funny bone and you'd go rolling. I kinda noticed in this show-specific Mad Libs book that no matter what you'd put in the blanks, it probably wouldn't be funny beyond just slightly absurd--it feels a little phoned in, as an excuse to sell something with popular characters on the front.

You can't really expect any "canon" content in a book like this, but it's fun to look for it if you're going to bother buying it. I was unsure whether the out-of-character stuff written to complete for the absurd stories was written that way because the whole thing is going to be silly on purpose so why try, or whether it had scenarios that couldn't/wouldn't happen with these characters because the creator of the book didn't actually know the source material. I think that would have irritated me a lot as a kid if I bought this for a way to interact with beloved stories and the situations were so off.

It has a "first day of Gem training" exercise scenario wherein Pearl tells him he'll be "the best Gem in the universe" if he can harness his Gemstone power, and Greg sings a weird song about troubles he doesn't have such as an unforgiving boss and a broken down truck. One of the prompts defines a Warp Whistle as something the Gems need to use the Warp Pad, which isn't true at all. A "history" Mad Lib suggests the whole Crystal Gems group is from the Gem Homeworld, which isn't true in Amethyst's case. A "let's switch weapons" scenario doesn't make a lot of sense because it ends with Garnet threatening to confiscate Amethyst and Pearl's weapons if they won't get along, and people who watch the show know why that doesn't make any sense. A page from Amethyst's diary says they fought a creature from [insert silly word] planet and a newspaper excerpt says Steven summoned a creature from another planet, while in the show they don't exactly fight random interplanetary creatures. One hide-and-seek-themed page has Amethyst in danger of being found because they cook her favorite food and that would inevitably make her Gem glow and give her away, which is definitely not something that happens in association with Amethyst ever eating or enjoying food. A book containing a Gem-related prophecy is found in Greg's shed at one point, while there's nothing in the show about written prophecies. And a weird factoid says Garnet learned to surf on another planet where surfing competitions pick the next president, which . . . well, for SU canon reasons, cannot have happened. This is all very silly to pick on, but again, it would have bothered me as a child and made me feel like adults who are writing materials about the show don't know it as well as I do.

My favorite Mad Libs were the ones where you get an invitation to Steven's birthday party, and then you get a follow-up discussing all the things that went wrong. And the one about Gem Fusion seemed to know what was going on, but I didn't think it would be very funny filled out.

I don't suppose we can take it as canon because this is a silly tie-in book, but one page says Garnet loves to surf. Well, that makes sense, since we did already know she was a Really. Good. Swimmer.

Definately not the best.

This strategy guide offers a complete walkthrough of the game and, at times, is quite helpful. But the walkthrough can be very confusing because there are only a couple pictures on a page. The few pictures are small and black and white. The guide also shows no maps, which would be VERY helpful. Because of the binding, this book is also hard to keep open while playing the game. I would recomend Prima's guide because their guides are usually the best you can get.
