Isabel is a noted scholar on the history and iconography of SE ASia. Husband Rene is a professional illustrator and photographer.
Together they have produced a comprehensive book -- beautifully illustrated and a pleasure to read.
It is equally suitable for detailed study, bedtime browsing or coffee table decoration . Quite a rare combination !
Strongly recommended as the finest book available in the market on the subject of Thai Magic Tattoos .

I was just going to skim though this book looking at the photos, which I love to do in libraries, but I ended up buying and reading it. This book changed the way I saw tattooed people. I learn so much about this practice, I did not imagine that tattoos may tell a bit of a story about ourselves.

BUYERS BEWARE: Don't buy this book.Seriously disappointed!!

At the time of writing this review, this book had three 5 star reviews (one of which is from the author himself) and other two are also without any credibility now that I have read the book .
There is hardly any theoretical explanation for the main concepts (permutation & combination, that is). The reader is buying a book specially written on P & C and the book explains the "Combination" concept in three lines and "Meaning" in two lines and the just dives right into examples. The examples given in the book are also with bare minimum explanations.
At best, it looks like the author has probably combined some course notes to create this book.
It also looks like there was no proof-reading done for this book.
Some of the sentences read like this:
a.) On page 2 (Basis Requirement to the Topic), this is what the 2nd sentences looks like : "This is the basic building block of permutation and combination hence knows how to use it."
b.) On page 2 (Basis Requirement to the Topic), this is what another sentence reads: " 0! Defined as equal to 1 so don't think why 0! = 1! = 1 just accepts it".
The author should probably look at some of the other books in the market on P & C and then decide where his book stands. This is not even a decent attempt to write a book. Anyone can compile examples from the net on the topic of this book and publish a book.

Excellent Anthology of short essays and excerpts

This "Reader" is a collection of some of the most influential and famous essays, or exerpts of larger works, by critics of the past 100 years. The works that are anthologized include: Ferdinand de Saussure's "Nature of the Linguistic Sign," Gerard Genette's "Structuralism and Literary Criticism," Roland Barthes's "The Death of the Author," Edward Said's "Crisis in Orientalism," and even Umberto Eco's "Casablanca: Cult Movies and Intertextual Collage." As far I can tell, the collection begins after New Criticism, although there are essays from the Russian Formalists. If you're interested in Structuralism/Semiology, Deconstructionism, Reader-response, Feminism, and Cultural Studies, then this anthology will work well for you.

This book is extremely useful to readers who are interested in literary criticism, and who do not necessarily want to do library searches to find the particular essay. The short biography of the author, as well as the "cross-reference" notes at the end of the biography, are helpful too. A similar anthology is *Literary Theory: An Anthology* edited by Julie Rivkin and Michael Ryan, which also collects the highlights of the theorists's work. However, I prefer Professor Lodge's book because 1) it more engaging, 2) it is smaller and more manageable.

Very useful for getting into theory, especially for undergraduates

This is by far one of the most useful textbooks I have used. I got it for a class a year ago and have used it as a supplement for nearly every class and paper since. The presentation makes the high-strung contemporary theory very accessible and the editors have done well to include a very broad scope of topics and positions, while maintaining a manageable size. It is very possible to read all of the essays, and each is very salient. I'm sure the 3rd edition (which has recently been released) only improves on all counts, most significantly in terms of including more and more contemporary critics. However, it is not necessary to shell out the extra $40 or so for a copy of that 3rd edition, or a brand new copy of of 2nd, when a used but immaculate 2nd edition will cost about $10 with shipping. The 2nd edition offers a very comprehensive--but not over-exhaustive--reading of trends in contemporary theory. About the Author

Walter J. Hendelman, MD, CM, is a professor emeritus of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa in Canada. Dr. Hendelman completed his medical studies at McGill University in Montreal. His research career on brain development included membership in various neuroscience and anatomy professional organizations, presentations at scientific conferences, and publications of his research findings. Dr. Hendelman has been deeply engaged as a teacher of neuroanatomy and has developed resources to learn the structure and function of the human brain, including authorship of the Atlas of Functional Neuroanatomy (and its Web site) and co-authorship of The Integrated Nervous System.

Great illustrations!

I bought this for my graduate-level human neuroanatomy primarily for the excellent illustrations. Rather than having only two-dimensional slices of all the structures, this book has very nice three-dimensional rendering. This gives the reader a better spatial representation of where structures are, which are close to one another (implying there could be connections), etc.
