Good basics, but better choices for the experienced
By Joe D
artridges of the World, authored by Frank C. Barnes and edited by Stan Skinner, is always a fun read and generally a good reference book, however, I believe the franchise publishers may be getting a little impatient in releases. The 11th edition was released only 10 months after the 10th edition, while the 10th edition was released almost 3 years after the 9th edition and with more appropriate timing based on new cartridge releases. In short, there wasn't much new included that shouldn't have easily made the 10th edition.

In general, I noticed no particular attempt by the author to update or correct entries that appeared in earlier editions. The 357 SIG is still listed as a new cartridge , with the suggestion that time will tell if it will succeed. The 357 SIG is chambered in almost every performance non 1911 autoloader and in heavy use with Federal agencies including air marshals and the FBI. The 376 Steyr carries an association with the Scout rifle which has not been available in that chamber for years. The Remington SAUM line and the WSM line read like a new introductions. There are some showcase articles on sub .22 caliber rifle cartridges and the Chinese standardization on the 5.8 caliber, although I am hard pressed to know why as the information is of little practical use and of interest to a very limited audience. I would have been happier with a review of the concepts behind the past few years of cartridge releases and the prospects for the future.

Some of the categorizing or editing has gotten a little sloppy and there is a decent amount of redundancy in listings. Virtually every cartridge that appears under the military heading and has found its way into sporting rifle use, is also listed under "Current American Rifle Cartridges; the 7x57mm Mauser, 8x57mm Mauser, 30-06 Springfield, 7.72 NATO, etc. Usually this dilemma of listing is handled with the least appropriate heading get an "See under x Category". Things got a little more foggy with the inclusion of the 303 British under "Current American Rifle Cartridges" with text describing it as the "official British military cartridge until the adoption of the 7.62 NATO" then goes on to indicate it has never been popular in the United States. I am not sure what the term "Current" means as the definition offered by the book makes no sense at all. According to COTW, current cartridges include those where ammunition is still available, even if only by special order, and only if chambered in modern guns, although not necessarily in guns manufactured and sold in the U.S. I guess this also explains the 8mm Remington Magnum and 375 Winchester being listed as current. Under the "Obsolete American Rifle Cartridge Category" you'll find the 405 Winchester, even though ammo and a current rifle is produced, and the 358 Norma Magnum which is not an American cartridge. The 38 Casull is listed as a mainstream handgun cartridge, as is the 32 North American, the latter cartridge I am only aware of being available in the North American Arms Guardian pistol. The 440 Cor-Bon, however, is listed as a proprietary cartridge, as is the 475 Linebaugh, the latter which is chambered in a number of firearms and available outside of the originator as brass and loaded ammo. Proprietary typically means supplied by the manufacturer for use only in their firearms. Based on some of the COTW definitions, the 257 Roberts would be a proprietary cartridge rather than a commercialized wildcat. Where rifle cartridges have the designations "current" and "obsolete", handgun cartridges carry the page heading "handgun cartridges of the world and there is an in page break heading "obsolete" in the middle of the listings - something easy to miss and also inaccurate. As an example, I shoot a Russian Nagant 7.62 revolver with some routine. The cartridge is listed as obsolete, rather than military and I buy newly manufacturers Fiocchi ammo routinely from suppliers.

That said, if I didn't have an earlier edition of Cartridges of the World I would buy a copy of the current release. If I had the 10th edition, I am not so sure. It is a good general reference book and there are few that offer the same. It is just not a book of great detail and sometimes with uneven listing.

Standard Reference Work, though not perfect
By Alexander Eichener
If there is one standard handbook for cartridge collectors as well as for "everyday" users, this one should be named foremost. It covers a very large range of current and obsolete cartridge both from the metric and the "imperial" (read: British and American) measurement systems, civilian and military alike. A number of the better-known wildcat and proprietary cartridges are also treated. Almost all cartridges are illustrated (though mostly not with measurements, which are confined to some cumbersome tables at the end of the chapters). While this book is not "the bible" and still contains many (often just minor) errors and inaccuracies, it is infinitely useful, and the well-known new editor, M.L. McPherson, has already made improvements over the previous (7th) edition. I strongly recommend this book as a "must buy" for even a very small firearms reference library - you will end up using it daily.

A great resource for any shooter!
By M. Dog
This is a wonderful book to just sit and read for pleasure as well as being a great reference resource. The history of each cartridge is discussed, as well as the author's personal thoughts on each cartridge. The author is a clear, concise writer without being dull, and the range of cartridges covered is very complete. I have used it often. I am currently reading Peter Hathaway Capstick's book, "Death in the Long Grass", which tells of his African hunting experiences. Capstick mentions several dangerous game cartridges, such as the .375 H&H Magnum and the .470 Nitro Express. I looked both up in this book and read about their histories. One very cool thing about the book is that each cartridge is pictured actual size. These big game cartridges are as big as cigars and go about 300 to 400 grain in weight (compared to one of my favorite cartridges, 30-30 win, which is usually about 150 grain). Included in the book are obsolete cartridges and those fascinating wildcat cartridges, such as the author's own creation, called the "thermos bottle" which must be seen to be believed. If firearm cartridges interest you for any reason you should have this book.

Night School: A Jack Reacher Novel, by Lee Child

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The incomparable hero of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back takes readers to school in his most explosive novel yet. After eleven straight global #1 bestsellers, discover the thrillers that The New York Times calls “utterly addictive.”

It’s 1996, and Reacher is still in the army. In the morning they give him a medal, and in the afternoon they send him back to school. That night he’s off the grid. Out of sight, out of mind.

Two other men are in the classroom—an FBI agent and a CIA analyst. Each is a first-rate operator, each is fresh off a big win, and each is wondering what the hell they are doing there.

Then they find out: A Jihadist sleeper cell in Hamburg, Germany, has received an unexpected visitor—a Saudi courier, seeking safe haven while waiting to rendezvous with persons unknown. A CIA asset, undercover inside the cell, has overheard the courier whisper a chilling message: “The American wants a hundred million dollars.”

For what? And who from? Reacher and his two new friends are told to find the American. Reacher recruits the best soldier he has ever worked with: Sergeant Frances Neagley. Their mission heats up in more ways than one, while always keeping their eyes on the prize: If they don’t get their man, the world will suffer an epic act of terrorism.

From Langley to Hamburg, Jalalabad to Kiev, Night School moves like a bullet through a treacherous landscape of double crosses, faked identities, and new and terrible enemies, as Reacher maneuvers inside the game and outside the law.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of November 2016: Last year’s Reacher book, Make Me, ended on a minor medical cliffhanger which I, for one, was looking forward to seeing resolved this Fall. But author Lee Child isn’t giving up the goods so easily. Instead of picking up where that book left off, he takes Reacher back in time to 1996. Still in the Army, Reacher is coming off a medal-earning career triumph when he is sent back to school. His three-man class (Reacher, a CIA guy and an FBI agent) however, is a front for a secret mission: figure out the plot behind a message intercepted in Germany which reads “the American wants 100 million dollars.” The good news for fans is that all the familiar elements show up in Night School: the words “Reacher says nothing” appear at least half a dozen times, and as usual, Reacher combines mechanical precision and brute strength to beat up bad guys with a degree of violence falling somewhere between Bruce Lee and a backhoe. Best of all, fan-favorite Sergeant Frances Neagley makes a welcome reappearance, riding shotgun with Reacher as he hunts for his quarry. Is the plot as robust and impressive as our hero? Not entirely, but readers will barely notice. Twenty-one books into this series it’s clear that what makes them work as well as they do is the joy of watching Reacher’s extraordinary powers of deduction working in tandem with his remarkable ass-kicking abilities. On that front, Child delivers as usual. --Vannessa Cronin, The Amazon Book Review

Lee Child's new book, "Night School" - a little less of the Jack Reacher we know and love, but still very good.
By N. Caruso
I’ve read all 20 Jack Reacher novels, written by Lee Child. I jumped at the chance to evaluate copy of his newest book. You don’t read 20 of anything unless you really like the characters, and “Night School” is no different. Taking place back in the mid-90’s Military Police Major Jack Reacher is reassigned to go back to school – but it isn’t what anyone thinks. It’s really just a cover to investigate a possible act of treason and terrorism. Reacher teams up with his old colleague Sgt. Frances Neagley and a group of new folks representing the FBI, CIA and the national Security Council to find out what is happening and how to stop it. The best part of a mystery is finding out what happens, so I won’t spoil anything, but Jack Reacher does his usual thing and in the end prevails in the usual Reacher fashion. The interaction between Neagley and Reacher, along with the other team members is entertaining.

That’s the good part, now the part that isn’t quite as good. I like Reacher novels because over the years he has been consistent - Jack Reacher is a really interesting character – keeps a clock in his head – always know exactly what time it is. Calculates the physics of a punch before he throws it, etc. In this book, Reacher is a bit more superficial. There is a lot less of Reacher’s thought process in this book and I felt it made the book a bit less fun to read. In fact, I can only give it “4 Stars” because it’s good – very good, in fact… but it lacks a bit of what makes Reacher novels so enjoyable.

Reacher fans will love it. Folks new to the series will enjoy it, as well. I enjoyed it. I just wish Lee Child done a bit more to keep Reacher’s character as unique and entertaining as he has done in the past.

Boring
By Dave Persinger
I love Reacher novels, and own them all, but this one was flat-out boring. Normally I can't stop reading and end up losing sleep because I have to know what happens next. With "Night School" I had to force myself to keep going. I'd suggest skipping this one, or waiting till later once the price has dropped.

"We truly have no idea what's coming next."
By E. Bukowsky
Lee Child, in "Night School," takes us back to 1996, when Jack Reacher was a thirty-five year old army major who had served his country for twelve years. His superior officer, General Garber, orders him to report to the Pentagon, where he is supposed to take a continuing education course. However, this is merely a ruse to keep anyone from knowing that the President of the United States wants Jack and a select group of agents from the CIA and FBI to prevent a catastrophe.

Alfred Ratcliffe, the National Security Adviser, and Raticliffe's deputy, Dr. Marion Sinclair, inform Reacher and his colleagues that an Iranian spy working for the CIA in Hamburg, Germany, has learned that Middle-Eastern extremists are about to make a major purchase from an unidentified American. We are off to the races, and fortunately, Reacher is on our side. In addition to his prowess in hand-to-hand combat (he is six feet five and two hundred and fifty pounds of muscle), Jack is a thinker who analyzes data, makes critical decisions, deploys resources as needed, and uses his uncanny instincts to excellent advantage. He recruits the intelligent and competent Sergeant Frances Neagley to assist him. Jack and company face a daunting challenge: They must identify the key players in this proposed exchange; find out where and when the sale is supposed to take place; and stop it from happening. All of this must be accomplished without alerting the public. Reacher ignores orders and sidesteps the law when it suits him. He knows that if he succeeds, he will be forgiven, but if he fails, he will be blamed and perhaps face prosecution.

"Night School" is a diverting throwback to the days before 9/11. The Internet and supercomputers had not yet changed the world. In addition to Reacher, a man who makes every word and deed count, the cast includes a German chief of detectives who has good reason to help Jack; a band of Aryan racists eager to pursue their own nefarious agenda; and the shadowy American who intends to enrich himself at the expense of countless innocent lives. This plot-driven story has the usual clichés (a race against time, highly-charged romantic encounters between Jack and his sexy lover, and a final violent confrontation), and the author makes no attempt to delineate his characters with any degree of subtlety. "Night School" may not be great literature, but Child doesn't pretend to be Tolstoy. He delivers a fast-paced novel of action-adventure that has enough thrills to entertain fans of this long-running series.

The New Testament in Antiquity: A Survey of the New Testament within Its Cultural Context, by Gary M. Burge, Lynn H. Cohick, Gene L. Green

The New Testament in Antiquity is a textbook for college and seminary students penned by three evangelical scholars with over fifty years of combined experience in the classroom. Their challenge was to build a text that would be engaging, academically robust, richly illustrated, and relevant to the modern student. This book strikes a balance between being accessible to all students and challenging them to explore the depths of the New Testament within its cultural worlds. The New Testament in Antiquity carefully develops how Jewish and Hellenistic cultures formed the essential environment in which the New Testament authors wrote their books and letters. It argues that knowing the land, history, and culture of this world brings remarkable new insights into how we read the New Testament itself. Numerous sidebars provide windows into the Jewish, Hellenistic, and Roman worlds and integrate this material directly with the interpretation of the literature of the New Testament. This is an ideal introductory text for classroom use, with ample discussion questions and bibliographies.

Review
“Complete with an extraordinary array of visual illustrations, this book covers important topics needed for an introductory text in New Testament in a way that is both understandable and well-informed. It emphasizes many details that help students discover the biblical text in new ways they would rarely get on their own.” -- Craig S. Keener

“. . . one of the best introductions and surveys in recent times. Remarkably attractive in its layout, with color pictures, color pictures, charts, diagrams and sidebars galore . . . If it's backgrounds you want to highlight in a one-semester introduction to the New Testament, this is the text to assign.” -- Craig L. Blomberg, PhD

Great Survey
By Joey Parker
The New Testament in Antiquity: A Survey of the New Testament Within Its Cultural Contexts by Burge, Cohick and Green is an excellent resource for studying the New Testament. The book is labeled as, and probably largely used as, a textbook for college and seminary students, but I can attest to the fact that it is not limited to just classroom use. I am not in Bible College or Seminary and I found the book to be very beneficial. Much of our understanding of what is written in the Bible starts with understanding the contexts in which it was written. If we misunderstand, or misrepresent the original context we can come away with a warped and incorrect view of what a passage of Scripture actually says. This is where a New Testament survey is helpful for a better understanding of the Bible.

This book begins with a few introductory chapters that lay the groundwork for a better understanding of the New Testament. These chapters are: Studying the New Testament, The Historical Setting of the New Testament, The World of Jesus in His Jewish Homeland, The Mediterranean World of the Apostle Paul, Sources for the Story of Jesus, The Story of Jesus and The Teachings of Jesus. These chapters are helpful in viewing the big picture of the New Testament before the authors explore the individual books more closely. The introductory chapter briefly focuses on topics like our bias, the importance of context, knowing the land, knowing the history, and knowing the culture. These are vital for proper interpretation. One of the first things I noticed as I was working through these chapters is the amount of pictures, charts, maps and timelines. I do not believe that there are back to back pages in the entire book that are void of some form of visual help. All of these visuals really benefit the reader and help to immerse them into the time period of the New Testament authors. There are also small sections titled Notes From Antiquity that provide additional information. Most of this information in these sections is not vitally important but more like "fun facts" for the reader.

Each chapter covers the setting for the book, its authorship, an outline, the writing style, its authorship and any other helpful information. This information is helpful to read before studying a book of the Bible. This book will help to better inform its reader on the historical and cultural context of the New Testament as well as provide beneficial visual aids. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to better understand the New Testament as they study their Bible.

I received a free copy of this book from Zondervan Academic in exchange for an honest review.

good survey level text
By HR Hamada
pretty good 50 series or survey level (VERY basic) text. I have seen the print version. It's easy to understand, well written with alot of very good photos and sidebars. With a title like NTIA, I had hoped for a solid 100 level text or even a 200 level text.
I WOULD recommend the text in print form
The kindle edition however is rife with formatting errors, misspellings. There needs to be a "second edition" of the kindle version.

A Solid Text, Kindle Edition Needs Work.
By Kristen Thomas-Arnold
I thought this was a very interesting book and help for the class discussions in the New Testament (a survey class). I felt at times that it was bogged down with an unnecessary amount of ancient culture before getting to that which pertains to the New Testament writings. At times it also made a strange distinction between Judaism and Christianity, as if they were two separate religions that just happen to have a lot in common instead of one being derived from the other.

As stated in other reviews, the Kindle edition is tragic, with misspellings, double words and parts of words; as well as areas that are complete gibberish. It's still plenty usable and the vast majority of information is there, it is just frustrating to read through at times.

Retitle to CISSP Prep Guide
By Bob Monroe
For some reason this huge book is mistitled. It should be called “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Security” or “The CISSP Preparation Guide”. At 699 pages in hardcover, along with a CD filled with additional material, you could hurt someone with this book. It is big and powerful in a literary and physical sense.

Nobody has ever said that security is a small topic. This guide illustrates the depth and vastness of our field in an elegant way. At first glance, you may be intimidated by the enormous amount of information filled through all the pages and across all the chapters. Robin Abernathy and Troy McMillian did a great job of picking apart all the subtopics that are needed to know if you want to pass the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner certification.

More importantly, this book is an excellent prep guide for taking the CISSP and for getting a good job in this ever growing profession. The pay is good here, too. To be completely honest, the pay is damn good in this field and there is a massive shortage of qualified people in this profession. Grab this book and start learning.

Now for the bad news. This is my own opinion and has nothing to do with the great work that the authors did on this book. The CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner is being advertised as a big step up from their Security + certification. For those of you who don’t know, the Security + is a baby step certificate. It is a license to get your foot in the door, to learn even more.

The CASP is an 85 question exam. I was at first shocked to read this in the book until I began laughing at the meaning of this. My daughter in elementary school has exams that have this many questions on them. The permit to register my dog has this many questions on it. For all you certificate-touting security folks out there, here is a quick and easy cert to add to your last name. For the length and depth of information in this guide written by Robin Abernathy and Troy McMillian, I was expecting a heck of a better exam than 85 questions.

The exam is pass or fail according to this book. What constitutes a pass versus a fail in unknown and not listed. In some exams, 70% is a passing grade. If the CASP requires a 70% passing grade out of 85 questions, than getting your name correct on the exam is half the battle. The CISSP is 250 questions, of which 50 questions are demo questions to see if those questions should be used in other exams. Weird, huh? However, a bachelor’s degree is four years of studying and testing. A master’s is another two years of more intense and deeper studying. A PhD in Cyber Security, which I’m working on, is quite a bit into the realm of ridiculously intense research and study.

Based on Department of Defense Directive 8570, you will qualify for more jobs with a CASP and even more with a CISSP than I will with a PhD. It doesn’t make sense but it doesn’t have too because it’s the government, enough said.

Now, back to the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner. Don’t start reading the introduction if you aren’t sure about taking the CASP. The introduction will scare the heck out of you because it covers such a huge amount of information and topics. Security is an ocean. You will need to know the top ½ of the surface of one harbor in that ocean to pass either the CASP or the CISSP. The book introduction gives you a good picture of how deep that ocean really is and it’s scary if you’ve never pondered the reality of this profession.

So don’t read the intro unless you are ready to understand how deep the rabbit hole goes. The authors did a good job of scaring you with the introduction. They do an even better job of scaring you with the first chapter on Cryptology. Most other security books place this topic near the middle or back of the book. Not Robin and Troy, they go right for your weak spot. Theory and practical application are covered quite well. They kept to the basics of each topic, which is a nice refresher for me but might be a bit much for others new to the field.

Each chapter has Key Topic markers letting you know that you might want to pay attention to this page or paragraph. The problem is, the whole book is a key topic. Every word written is important even though it probably won’t be on the 85 question exam. The chapters end with a review of concepts and multiple choice questions. The questions are worded to reflect exactly what you would expect from the exam because the book is written by the folks who made the certification.

The book even comes with information on how and where to take the test plus a 10% off exam voucher. If I haven’t made myself clear enough, this guild is much more than an exam prep for the CASP. This book is an excellent primer for the CISSP; it just isn’t broken down into the ten domains of that exam. Think about it this way, if you read this book and take the CASP you are about 80% towards taking the CISSP exam with that knowledge. It is worth the price to grab this Pearson Certification book followed by one CISSP prep book. Then, you’ll have two very good certs and a nice job while I’m still serving hamburgers at a fast food joint with my PhD.

By Victor
Great book, puts you in a fast track and does not lose time on things you were suppose to know at this level.
However, cryptography points scattered on the book could use extra work, as the first chapter does. Cryptography seems to be to weakest part of the book, strangely with a dedicated first chapter. I would recommend skipping the first chapter if you have a cryptography background, but it is a good start if the concepts seems unfamiliar, it is presented in a professional language, maybe an academic book would be a nice complement to this reading.
Overall, it is a massive source of knowledge, nicely organized for learning and reviewing (I will keep this book around).

Passed on the first try with significant assistance from this book.
By Life is Short
Got this for my wife who is not a security engineer but was required to get a mid level IT security certification. Upon first reading I was aghast at how difficult it was to get a grasp of the material from just reading this book - and I have an MS in CS from a top tier grad school. After speaking with others in the IT field, I discovered that the certification is intended for people that already have some experience working as professional IT security engineers. This book seems intended for such experienced people. After my wife took (and passed) the exam, and after looking at materials she was provided by a training class in advance of the exam, I realized that this book actually covered more of the concepts and definitions included on the exam than any other reference material we used. In fact, there was nothing on the exam that was not covered in this book. Even the language and writing style seemed consistent with that used on the actual exam.

When you have limited bookshelf space
By C. Matthews
The eighth edition of The Manager's Bookshelf provides an overview of the most important management and leadership models in use today. The book consists of excerpts and articles that summarize the best and original thinking on the subject. For example, Maslow's hierarchy is classic; the excerpt from the original work faithfully presents the model and many of its facets. Peter Senge seems to have written the section about the Fifth Discipline, which is an effective summary of system thinking leading to The Dance of Change (one of Senge's later works).

The book is not a quick-self-help book. The management and leadership models are meant for meditation. The editors provided a great resource to ponder the meanings, while avoiding making the book ponderous.

If you have the resources, buy the original works and read them. If you need a quick reference that gives the best picture of the original material and the ability to compare some complementary ideas side by side, this is am excellent book to work with.

Great Graduate Level Cases

Useful for developing critical thinking skills
By Eva Martinez
Used in a graduate school course. The summaries of popular books were critiqued for class. For educators and students, it is a valuable learning tool for developing critical thinking skills. Managers, leaders, and entrepreneurs can get a general idea of what popular books are about. During conversations with peers, business professionals might be able to make a comment or two that makes them appear knowledgeable about popular trends in management, strategy, human resources, etc. Many books for professionals are based on opinion, not fact, so reading the book reviews/summaries in this book, Manager's Bookshelf, is a good place to start before buying books that may never be worth reading in entirety.
