About the Author
Robert Kosowski is Associate Professor in the Finance Group of Imperial College Business School, Imperial College London, and Director of the Risk Management Lab and Centre for Hedge Fund Research. Robert is an associate member of the Oxford-Man Institute of Quantitative Finance at Oxford University and a member of AIMA's research committee. His research interests include asset management, asset pricing, and financial econometrics with a focus on hedge and mutual funds, performance measurement, asset allocation, business cycles, and derivative trading strategies.

Robert's research has been featured in "The Financial Times" and "The Wall Street Journal" and was awarded the European Finance Association 2007 Best Paper Award, an INQUIRE UK 2008 best paper award, an INQUIRE Europe 2009/10 and 2012/13 best paper award, and the British Academy's mid-career fellowship (2011-2012). Robert's research has been published in top peer-reviewed finance journals such as "The Journal of Finance," "The Journal of Financial Economics" and the "Review of Financial Studies."

Prior to joining Imperial College London Robert was an Assistant Professor of Finance at INSEAD, where he taught in the MBA, Executive Education, and Ph.D. programs. Robert was a visiting scholar at the UCSD Economics Department (2000) and the International Monetary Fund (2008). At Imperial Robert teaches in the MSc Finance. He won teaching prizes at Imperial College Business School in 2009 and 2014.

Robert holds a BA (First Class Honours) and MA in Economics from Trinity College, Cambridge University, and a MSc in Economics and Ph.D. from the London School of Economics. He has consulted for private and public sector organizations and has worked for Goldman Sachs, the Boston Consulting Group, and Deutsche Bank. His policy related advisory work includes: Specialist Adviser to UK House of Lords (2009-2010) and Expert Technical Consultant (International Monetary Fund, USA, 2008).

Professor Neftci completed his Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota and was head of the FAME Certificate program in Switzerland. He taught at the Graduate School, City University of New York; ICMA Centre, University of Reading; and at the University of Lausanne. He was also a Visiting Professor in the Finance Department at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Known his books and articles, he was a regular columnist for CBN daily, the most influential financial newspaper in China.

Excellent and Clear Book on Financial Products

I am using this book for a graduate course in Financial Engineering/Modeling and am incredibly impressed on several accounts. The authors breakdown the financial math in an intuitive way that is accessible to all and clearly develop the related/necessary formulas. The presentation is lucid, logical, and bounded - giving a strong foundation in product design. The diagrams and examples are very helpful for students in understanding the cash flows and many interesting case studies are brought as well.

The approach used gives well-received explanations, applications, and motivations for products. The authors steer clear of the media bias and misunderstanding/derision of many products - and go out of their way to elucidate the benefits and risks involved.

I am very pleased with the development of options as instruments of volatility and the integration to overall product development.

I would also seriously warn anyone looking for an easy way out - this is a very thorough book and contains a wealth of information, you must practice in Excel and try programming the products (much more so than the number of exercises given at the end of each chapter).

This book is very "readable" for the non-academic and an absolutely necessary piece of risk management. If you would like to truly understand the rationale and build of synthetics - this is the book for you!

The Kindle Version is Useless. Don't Buy It.

I apologize in advance: This is for the kindle version.

It's not possible to leave a Kindle-specific review, but people like me, who want to buy the Kindle version, need to know just how awful the digital copy is. It's a shame, because the book itself if phenomenal (although from what I can see, edition 1 is better than edition 3).

The mathematics in the Kindle version is impossible to read without a magnifying glass. I've posted two screenshots from Samsung Note 2 phone, and two screenshots from a Google Nexus 10. And, no, you can't increase the math fontsize. It's fixed.

I'll let the screenshots speak for themselves. Now I'm going to see if I can get my money back.

ONE OF THE BEST, PERHAPS THE BEST, BIOGRAPHY OF HUME

Ernest Campbell Mossner was an English professor at the University of Texas at Austin. His biography of the Scottish empiricist and skeptical philosopher David Hume is perhaps the best and most detailed available.

Mossner notes that "Hume was the first distinguished man of letters in Britain to make a fortune from literature alone," and adds that "The young Boswell in 1762 had no hesitation in naming Hume as 'the greatest Writer in Britain.'" (Later in life, Boswell wrote, "Were it not for his infidel writings, every body would love him. He is a plain, obliging, kindhearted man.")

Concerning Hume's reputation as an infidel, "The religous beliefs of David Hume were probably lost while he was at college or shortly thereafter." Mossner notes that "it is also clear that those religious beliefs were relinquished under philosophical pressure---that Hume reasoned himself out of religion." Nevertheless, he was no polemical writer. In his own brief autobiography, Hume noted, "I had fixed a Resolution, which I inflexibly maintained, never to reply to any body; and not being very irascible in my Temper, I have easily kept myself clear of all literary Squabbles."

About Hume's famous The History of England (1826), Mossner writes, "What Hume had given the world in his 'History of England' was a broad, sweeping narrative of the national developments, philosophically coherent, artistically ordered, and pre-eminently readable. He made no pretense of 'research' scholarship but anticipated the modern synthetic historian in uniting and enlivening the sometimes ponderous research of others."

Mossner covers the famous dispute between Hume and Rousseau, after which Hume sighed, "my affair with Rousseau is now finally and totally at an end, at least on my part: for I never surely shall publish another line on that subject." Mossner notes that "In general, the world agreed that Hume had acted the part of a benevolent and virtuous friend..."

Mossner observes that "David Hume in later life, in Italy, and France, and Scotland, was to prove himself a man of normal sexual desires." Late in life, "He continued to enjoy ... the company of attractive adn vivacious women, and in his autobiography was to write with studied understatement that, 'as I took a particular Pleasure in the company of modest women, I had no reason to be displeased with the Reception I met with from them."

Hume was a well-loved person. "Hume's jests with intimate friends are legion and his letters are replete with wit and with witticisms. The topic of his own obesity ... became a perennial favorite," and "the French found Hume to be truly le bon David: and their original admiration for his intellect was consequently augmented by affection for his person."

Mossner concludes by saying that "There can, likewise, be no doubt that in his life he followed admirably his own caution: 'Be a philosopher, but amidst all your philosophy, be still a man.'"

This book is ESSENTIAL READING for anyone interested in Hume, philosophy, or the lives of philosophers.

Fine Biography

This is only modern biography of Hume. Very well written and researched, it concentrates on Hume's personal life and career as a man of letters. Hume is a wonderful subject for a biography; an important figure who is simultaneously a warm and attractive personality. Mossner does an excellent job of detailing Hume's personal life, friendships, and literary career. For individuals really interested in Hume, this book is a treasure trove of information. It is also a very valuable work on the intellectual culture of 18th century Scotland and the Enlightenment in general. Mossner describes very well the intellectual atmosphere of lowland Scotland, which produced not only Hume, but Adam Smith, the great chemist Joseph Black (though Mossner mentions him only as a physician), and numerous other important intellectuals. Mossner shows also the international quality of the Enlightenment. Within months of publication, Hume's Treatise on Human Nature was mentioned in German publications, and his later, more popular works were known across Europe. Hume had an international, even intercontinental (Benjamin Franklin), set of correspondents and friends. This books is a valuable companion to reading Hume's work.
What this book is not, however, is a full scale critical work. Actual discussion and analysis of Hume's important philosophical work is relatively brief. Nor is there much explicit discussion of the origins of Hume's thought in the work of prior 18th and 17th century thinkers. This biography was last revised in the late 1970s and apparently not greatly changed from the original version published in 1954. Over the course of the 20th century, Hume came to be regarded as one of the real titans of Western thought, with a corresponding increase in the secondary literature on Hume. We also know much more about the 18th century and the Enlightenment than Mossner. There is definitely a need for a major critical biography of Hume, though producing such a work could easily consume a scholar's career.

Best modern biography of Hume the man.

Mossner's book generally is considered the modern "standard" biography of Hume, and rightly so: It is an extensively researched and comprehensive narrative chronology of Hume's personal and public life, full of telling detail and anecdotes. Mossner unapologetically speculates on interesting points when the research does not supply an answer, but does so transparently and usually convincingly. Anyone with an interest in the man, as well as the philosopher, likely will enjoy this book, as I did.

A significant caveat (as noted in a useful comment on this site by R. Albin): This is not a critical examination of Hume's philosophical arguments or intellectual influences as such, although one certainly will learn the gist of Hume's arguments and much about their context. Other, recent books on Hume may supply this shortcoming. I have recommend Nicholas Phillipson's "David Hume: The Philosopher as Historian," which specifically considers Hume's treatment of history and method of historical writing. I also note that a recently published work by James Harris aims to provide that missing critical analysisin his "Hume: An Intellectual Biography." I have not yet read Harris's book, but expect that I will, as the description and initial reviews are encouraging. Finally, if you are looking for a modern, but much briefer introduction to Hume, you should consider Annette C. Baier's "The Pursuits of Philosophy: An Introduction to the Life and Thought of David Hume." It doesn't have the richness of Mossner's much book, but is nicely written and provides a solid introduction, along with some interesting reflections.

One warning (again, noted in some other comments): The Oxford University Press paperback version is disgracefully printed. The paper cover and binding are cheap, and the quality of the printing is terrible: The text spacing is inconsistent, the font is odd, and the print alternately fades and brightens throughout the book. If this were a $10 reprint, one would make allowances, but even acknowledging the length and density of the volume, the price makes the sloppy printing inexcusable. If I were looking for a new copy, I would look for a decent, used hardcover.

If you could have but one fake book ---

This is one of the best. Easy to read during a gig. Very comprehensive. Plenty of tunes to keep you busy memorizing them for years. One book cannot have every tune, but this a great start. I also recommend volumes 2 and 3.

The Bible of Jazz sheet music!

This book has hundreds of pages filled with all kinds of jazz tunes, written in the clearest font possible. Most tunes have the basic chord changes and general solo's, but some are "as played by ..." and may even have the bass, piano or rythyms section written out, if it's particularly special. A must for people playing jazz from sheet music. If you could ever finish this book, you can get versions two and three both filled only with new, completely different songs!

Excellent book, but don't expect the old Real Book here

If you're looking to this book as an updated version of the old "Real Book", you will likely be disappointed. While there are a few tunes in common, most of the tunes in the old "Real Book" are not present here, replaced by newer (sometimes more complicated) compositions. The format and calligraphy in the book, while most excellent, is noticeably more formal than that of the old "Real Book", and may take some getting used to.

THAT SAID, if you disregard the implicit connection to the old "Real Book", this book stands on its own quite well. It IS an extremely well-prepared collection of jazz tunes, some of which you would be hard-pressed to find transcribed anywhere else (e.g., "Waterwings"). This doesn't really replace the old "Real Book", but it supplements it nicely.

N. Thompson Hobbs is senior research scientist at the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory and professor in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability at Colorado State University. Mevin B. Hooten is associate professor in the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology and the Department of Statistics at Colorado State University, and assistant unit leader in the US Geological Survey's Colorado Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.

Taming His Pup is the third book in the Club Depravity series by author H.C. Brown. This is my first time reading this series. While I did feel I missed something, it did not interfere with my enjoyment of this particular story. Though made me want to read Jackson’s tale really badly!
Ben is submissive. He goes with his friend to Club Depravity and watches a certain Dom work on his subs. Ben works in a library and is generally a nerd. But one Dom is about to change all that. The Dom Ben thinks he can never have has suddenly decided he wants him and has come to stake his claim.
Shayd Blackraven is a base guitarist for the band Alpha Rock. He is a Dom, and is looking for a geek to dominate. Someone fresh and new to the scene. Someone just like Ben. I like his confidence. He is not afraid to say I love you, or to take what he wants. He also knows when to slow down and let Ben take the lead.
Over all this a great story the two men really do explore just how far they want to go with each other. What I liked is the level of love and trust they develop. I also liked getting to know the other players at Club Depravity. I will now have to go back and see what I have missed. I know I wanna know about Jackson he has to have a story next! I will be watching for it.

H.C. Brown has written a short story that is ANYTHING but tame! This tale of bad boy Dom stalking vanilla, but interested virgin sub will keep you glued from the first page until the very last!
