About the Author
Syd Mead, born in St. Paul Minnesota, in 1933, graduated from the Art Center School of design in 1959 after serving 3 years in the US Army. Syd Mead was hired by the advanced auto design studio of Ford Motor Co. while still in school to create concept designs for the futuristic show cars the other designers would look to for inspiration. Syd left Ford Mo Co after only two years to begin working on his own for such clients as Raymond Loye, US Steel, Phillips, and eventually every major studio in Hollywood.

Why is this not currently in print?

At least as of this writing, it is not, and I cannot understand why this would be so. A copy of the book might be unpleasantly expensive, and it may cause tears when you sign the check. That won't matter, and you may not even notice you are reduced to little more than freeze dried ramen for a while. It is beautiful. (The book, not the ramen...)
Oversized volume, with artwork ranging from rough doodles and shape explorations in pencil, ink sketchwork and ZOMG beautiful finished paintings. Work covers automotive concept projects, a little of the "steel couture" series, studies and complete painted scenes from movie projects, interspersed with some of Mead's thinking on the process and result of his work on these various efforts.
I deeply respect Syd Mead as an industrial designer and conceptual artist. What he creates ignores boundaries imposed by the "culture of bland", the accountants insistence for beige blobs that resemble photoshopped potatoes, or worn bars of soap in cornflower blue, meant for users presumed incapable of tying their own shoelaces without risk of serious injury. The language of Mead's work is not for worlds ruled by Department of Health & Safety bureaucrats and cultural sensitivity lawyers, inhabited by mincing paedophile vampires or vacuous bottle-tanned New Jersey beachrats, and the iPod cult(ure) could not have found traction here. There are edges, solidity, in what he creates; sleek objects that have never been made and yet you feel as though you ought to be able to find one at the spinner dealership on the corner, or watch homecoming celebrations on CNN for the intrepid expeditionary spaceship having finally returned to Earth orbit from the long trip out to Jupiter. The design language in OBLAGON is that the user is competent, of a tomorrow waiting only for you to grab the very analog keys to the car and GO.

Phenomenal views of future possibilities!

I recently got this book, and absolutely loved it. If you're of a futurist bent, and thirst for views of how things *might* be, then this is a book for you.
The illustrations are lavish, and the explanations of the design concepts behind the art give you a better idea of some of the planning that has gone into the picture, as well as possible avenues for future construction technologies.
I'm hooked. I have another book on order, and am saving up for other books of his. (He also has a mailing list. I got details in a flyer tucked into my copy of this book...)

A must-have for industial design students and illustrators

Syd Mead sometimes calls himself a "futureist" and his credits in the sci-fi classic Blade Runner read "Visual Specialist". This is an amazing collection of Syd Mead's visual art of the future and is not only beautiful to look at but is an intelligent view of future machinary and cuture.
